    Coons...carnivores?

New one on me. Last night wife heard squalling and screaming out on the deck. Switched on the yard light and saw a coon crawling up a tree with a small cottontail rabbit in its mouth. Second coon was following it up the tree. For the next few minutes the two coons were killing the rabbit on the roof. She had to turn the TV up to drown out the squalling. Made her mad. I knew coons ate fish, clams, bugs, fruit and of course corn. Did not know they were carnivores. Never heard of that.

I recently had a guy on my lease tell me they would eat the face/nose area off of newborn deer.

They are omnivores and will eat a variety of food. Mammals, reptiles, amphibians, eggs, etc.

That alone would make them omnivores.
Have you ever looked at their teeth? Herbivores don't have the long canine teeth. Anything with those "fangs" will eat raw meat.

We raised rabbits for many years and it was a full time job keeping them safe from the raccoons. The would reach into the cages as the rabbit was sleeping and grab the ears resulting many times with the ears being pulled off.

I have even had them respond to a rabbit distress call before while we were calling for coyotes.

This reminds me of the time I watched a squirrel dining on a dove. He was rocked back on his haunches munching on it like a piece of corn on the cob.
