Thinking about buying a safe, read this first!!

I have a Winchester safe with a digital key pad on it. The battery was going dead on it so I replaced it, now it won't open. When you enter the code it acts like it recognizes it but its not unlocking and it's not giving any kind of series of beeps indicating something is wrong. I'm panick...

Wow. Thanks for sharing that link. I'll be in the market soon for a safe, and I think I know which brands I'll be steering clear from.

        Thanks for sharing.

I'm in the market for a safe and have been leaning towards a Liberty. I know for sure I won't be going with a Winchester!! Had originally though of an electronic lock, but I've just changed my mind...

I read that forum about six months ago. Was researching what to do if my digital lock failed on my safe (Cannon)! Pretty much bummed me out reading all that info. I've had the safe for about five years and no problems so far. But if I were buying again, I'd go old-school no-tech manual dial.

I was locked out of my double barrel shotgun case about 2 weeks ago. The funny thing is that I got it for a steal of a deal at Cabelas because they didn't know the combination. I asked them if I could pick it, would they give me a great deal because they can't sell it with it locked and no combo. They agreed and I picked it. When I tried to open it the other day I couldn't remember the combo and I couldn't pick it to save my life. I had to go to youtube and have a 12 year old show me how to pick it.

That's ridiculous! My parents have an electrical safe but it's not a Winchester. I can't remember the brand but I'm checking when I go out there this evening!!!

I'm with you on this one Clint.
Was thinking a electronic lock too, and still might for the quickness. However does anyone know about this Skeleton Key thing and how that works exactly?

Ironically I have a Winchester safe that came with a manual dial. I have had (2) of them fail in less than 3 years.

I replaced it with an AMSEC electronic keypad and it has been flawless so far.

Even "if" the keypad never went out, what spooks me is the metal strip that was slid inside to trigger the reset button... Easy access for a thief...

As far as the "quickness" of an electronic keypad to get into the safe, IMO, if you're depending on storing your home defense gun in a gun safe like this, you're asking for trouble. Get a bedside quick access safe for your handgun.

I've had an AMSEC in the past. The rotary dial suddenly wouldn't open it one day. They sent a locksmith out to get it fixed on their dime, no questions.
