If he wants to lose weight and keep it off, he's not looking for a diet he's looking for a lifestyle change. A lot of these diets above will work great, but if he doesn't have the discipline to keep them for the rest of his life then it is just a temporary fix. I have lost 75 lbs since November by changing up a few things that I SHOULD be able
To maintain the rest of my life. I didn't start working out until a month ago.

-figure out your basal metabolic rate, how many kcals your body needs per day based on age weight and activity level. I was 6'1" 354 lbs moderately active and mine was somewhere around 3400!

-I cut my calorie intake down to less than 2000 kcals per day by ballpark figuring my meals. An example would be 500 calorie meals at 7, 12, and 6, then 250 cal snacks at 10 and 3.

-drink 3 waters for any other drink you have during the day. If I want a glass of sweet tea for lunch and dinner, I'm drinking at least 6 bottles of water.

-3 hrs before bedtime, shut it down...only thing that goes in your body is water or fruit if you're really hungry.

-If you have no choice but fast food, get their grilled chicken sandwich, no fries. It will typically keep you in the 500 calorie range sometimes a little more but it works and you'll be surprised how long they last.

I also cheat on the weekends, I used to go all out but lately now I only do it one or two meals since I was losing 8 lbs m-f then gaining 4 on sat-sun. I also have a lot of meal supplement shakes from gnc, they're nice too bc I don't have to stop as long for lunch to fix something and I know exactly how many kcals I'm getting.

Breakfast- fresh fruit whole wheat bread egg sandwhich

        snack- fresh fruit and nuts

Lunch- fresh fruit chicken breast sandwhich with cheese on whole wheat bread and nuts

snack- raw carrots with light ranch and nuts

dinner- baked chicken breast or baked fish sauteed vegetables salad with light dressing and black beans

dessert- nutella covered strawberries, nutella toast and banana

You could eat more than one helping of these meals and never come close to the amount of calories a processed or fast food meal has!!! You will feel great and gain a plethra of energy with many immune system boosting vitamins. Also this is high in fiber so it helps release many undesirables through the bowls!!!!!

I lost 50 over the last year eating nothing but fruits, vegetables, and nuts as sides and snacks and had whole wheat pasta, brown rice, and whole wheat bread for sandwiches along with meat with meals. The main thing is stay aways from anything processed, if you look at the ingredient label and it's a paragraph don't eat it, it takes alot to burn those empty calories and your body gets no nutrition from them, the least amount of ingredients in your meal the better.

Eating whole foods allows you literally eat till your beyond full while not adding any substantial calorie intake. A meal at night would be salad with light dressing, chicken (anyway you like it), vegetables (any way you like them) and a side of beans as an example. A hand full of nuts as a snack if your still hungry is all good. You could eat two plates of this meal and still not eat as much calories as one burger and fries. Keep track of your calories for a couple weeks to get an idea of what a normal meal will consist of, I would not get too far above 2000 a day, and don't lose no more than 2lbs per week, 1.5lbs a week is ideal. Lastly give yourself one meal a week as a cheat meal, don't go crazy but eat something high in fat and calories, it doesn't just help you keep focused on your diet, it also keeps your body guessing therefore burns alot more calories when you go back to eating clean food. Keeping the weight off is a lifestyle change, not a phase, but let me tell you it sure makes you feel better!!!
            Yup,

I had to loose 35lbs to make weight so I could take some scouts to Philmont.
I did as above plus walking/jogging about every other day. But I also did two days a week of fasting, which was only 500 calories a day, twice a week. Worked for me.

The hard part is finding what type of program works for you. I don't care much for grazing six times a day. I don't have much of a problem eating only once. But I love food.
