Depends on my stress level, right now about every other night is little to no sleep. Melatonin never did a thing for me. Ambien is good and I have a muscle relaxer that knocks me out pretty good as well, but will still wake up in the middle of the night, just able to go back to sleep.

If I wasn't so lazy I would try exercising to help me sleep, but nah....

I rarely get a good nights sleep...worst part is watching wife in rem sleep 2 seconds after her head hits the pillow, while I'm currently reading Brad Thor's 'The Black List' longer than I normally would just to make my eyes tired. Sometimes I have to back a chapter and re-read.

Still takes forever to fall asleep and then 4AM shows up...I tried melatonin and some others but nothing seems to work for me for a good 6-8 hour rest every night.

I'm pretty sure my corrective action is to start working out again. My Dr. told me 'good' sleep was more important that exsercise for daily function. I think Mary is right and the two go hand in hand for most people.

x2, that's why I drink so much. I usually get 1-2 decent nights a week except lately I have been stressing about a big order at work.

Full moon and a day or two before and after.
Google it, it does have an effect on some people.
Other than that , sleep like a baby unless something is bothering me

Yep! 9 out of 10 nights for me, maybe more.

I was wide awake last night when this thread was started.

Seems like every month or two I get on about a 2-3 week insomnia kick. Most nights I'll be lucky to get 2-3 hours of light sleep and the rest is tossing and turning. Even between the insomnia kicks, it seems I still sleep very lightly and up early in the morning. I'm not into taking anything for it, I don't like taking pills period.

I've got some new gel cap models that will nock you out, give you freaky dreams too .

I also take ambien on occasion, but prefer the melatonin.
                    .....
This. generally, I go to bed without it and if I'm not asleep within 30 minutes I take it.

I'm exhausted and can't seem to focus or wake up if I take ambien and have to get up before I naturally would. I'm worried that melatonin will be the same way.

I just can't handle three nights of very little sleep within a few days. It's kicking my butt. The last time I looked at the clock it was 3:57 am and I was still wide awake. Two hours of sleep isn't enough for me!
Ambien is like a delay button for bad sleep for me. Take it one night, next night can't sleep. Take it two nights in a row, third night can't sleep.
It's as if the piper has to be paid sooner or later.

Melatonin- different brands matter. Some are useless as to where others work wonders. You have to find your brand.
Like I posted previously the gel pills I'm using now are STRONG, make me feel half drunk if I wake up to roll over or whatnot.

As with ambien, make sure you cut out 8hrs of sleep time for Mealtonin or you can have carry over effects of drowsiness, but nowhere near as bad as ambien.

                        Here's how I use it.
                        1. Take the pill at ~8.5 hrs before wake up time.
                        2. Get in bed at ~8hrs before wake up time if possible.
                        3. Jam in ear plugs- outside noise will stimulate some sort of a "what was that" in the brain and wake me up.(I've got a home alarm system, wife & house dog to wake me if neccesary)
                        4. Get something not "super-exciting" to read. The wrong novel will keep you awake worse than TV. I prefer non-fiction or old testement books of the Bible.
                        5. When your eyes start to fade it's book down and lights out.
                        6. If not asleep in ~15 minutes, repeat step 4 & 5.

                        Good point.

At my last place of employment (15 years ago) we worked our tail off for 12 hrs straight, every day or night depending on shift. Sleep was NEVER a problem while working there because I was completely worn out by the time I laid down.

Once I obtained employement at my current position the insomnia was almost instant due to the lack of pysical exertion (IMHO). A normal work shift only requires 2-5hrs of physical activity out of 12. That amount of seat time leaves my body rested and not needing sleep. Or so it would seem.

Like I posted earlier my insomnia has gotten better as I've gotten older.
                        Good luck with it.

Go run 5 miles. You will have no problem resting afterwards.

If I ran 5 miles I would be taking THE dirt nap!

This. I can't remember the last time I had 8 hrs or more of sleep. I can usually cope a little better at home but here at work it's rough. I work midnight to noon. Today I fell asleep about 3:00 and I have been up since 6:50. It's bin this way for the past 15 days.
