Spray your boots and pants with this. Keeps them off of me.
This.
If there is one chigger anywhere on the ranch...it will find me. I spray my boots with Repel and it helps alot. If I will be in tall grass or sitting (during turkey hunting) I spray my clothes the night before. Don't get this stuff on your skin, though.
I got them bad at the ranch this year and they were tearing me up just getting out of the truck. I now have been using Permethrin insect repellent on my clothing and boots and Repel 100 insect repellent with 98.11% deet on my skin and have not had another bite. They say the Permethrin spray will last up to 6 weeks and 6 washings before needing to be reapplied. I know it's lasted two weeks and one washing and will see how long it does last. I did a lot of searching and found that Permethrin and deet are about the best at stopping chiggers.
I am told in order to get max exposure to chiggers you need to lay under the bailer for 45 minutes changing a bearing. Oh, and seed ticks on top of that is also great......
The whole nail polish, bleach or anything else to put on them is all false. They do not burrow or stay on you. Once you are itching they have already bit you and gone. The bleach, polish etc. relieves the itching this is why people think youre killing the chigger.
You have to just keep them off of you to begin with.
False or not I don't care if I am killing him or not I am trying to relieve the itching and it works!
Benedryl or cortisone cream helps to stop the itching. Jaybo31 is right. They don't burrow into you or stay on you. The enzyme they use to break down your skin tissue is what itches.
Heres a watchout, if you are bushwacking around in the grass and weeds and have sprayed on OFF or some other repellant, they will get off in your truck then get back on you when you get back in the truck unprotected. They are real hungry by then!

Maybe this will help take your mind off of the itching for a little bit. I'm not to sure if he is correct on what the chigger does, but I like the song.

I use regular old bug/ mosquito repellant. I soak my pants from the knees down and pay particular attention to the lace holes in my shoes. It takes me a year to heal from a chiggar bite. I hate them more than scorpions.
Been there done that. Was brush clearing at the lease a few years ago and got into them very bad. You really don't know it until the next day. I thought I had gotten into poison ivy at first. Had a couple hundred bites on each leg and a few other in not so cool places. Anti itch cream worked alright, but realistically the only thing that makes chigger bites feel better is time.
Deet works fine if you don't plan on hunting. Spray down good, especially down at your feet, around your waist and arms. I'll get a couple bites from time to time, but that's not all that bad. Sulfur powder works alright if you can find it.
As for hunting, all I can say is try your best not to walkthrough high grass or crawl through thick brush or thicket, etc. Chiggers generally are on these things and hop onto you whenever you brush up against them. That's why you can really get into them if clearing brush; i.e. dragging limbs around, etc.
