Last batch I made was pretty solid...venison obviously, with spicy Texas black eyed peas, sauteed Texas spinach, and you know that aint powdered gravy! I'd put it up against any restaurant!

I think my favorite is probably just what I make at home from venison. I don't do anything secret or super special, but it just comes out better than most restaurants, and I can eat as much of it as I want.

Some things are just better when you do them yourself (BBQ, CFS, catfish, crawfish, etc). Technically there are lots of places that cook way better than I can but we're happy enough with what we do and we can take our time and enjoy ourselves while we do it.

George's in Waco is right up there, then the bar scene and atmosphere are second to none.

Hill's Cafe in Austin has a pretty good pan fried one(not deep fried in grease) with yella gravy.

My mom lives 5 minutes away from NYH. I would have to rate Marys at about the same level as nyh on cfs. But NYH is much easier to get to and has kind of a neat view since its above evrything else. Smoke stack is definetly not my favorite place to eat. I usually go about a mile farther north on 108 and get some good greasy pizza in Mingus at BJ's.

          NYH gets my vote

I almost forgot. One of the best I've ever had was at Ponder Steakhouse last summer. They have fried zuchini the right way too.

George's (Waco), Mary's (Strawn), Fred's (Fort Worth) are all my top picks.

But my #1 favorite is Bill & Rosa's in D'Hanis, TX. I am not for sure if it is even open anymore.

                  Also,
If you're in Fredericksburg area, hit up the Hilltop cafe. Good eating right there.

The Saddle Blanket at the Brush Country Inn and Restaurant in Rivera. Just outside Kingsville. Don't know if it is still there.

George's in Waco is retty good too.

Tip Top Cafe in San Antonio.... gravy on the bottom and best yeast rolls.

Winner! With a Big O...tough to beat. Mary's is good though.

Always prefer the mom and pop places but Texas Road House is pretty tough to beat

I haven't been there in a while but the Potato Patch off 1960 had a real good chicken fried steak. The Barbecue Inn always seems to get voted "Best Chicken Fried Steak in Houston" but I never tried it.

I can't remember the name of the place but It was some cafe/restraunt in Marble Falls I ate at when I went to work a job with my dad when I was about 15. just looked up restruants there and i believe it was the blue bonnet cafe. 10-12 years ago they had an awesome cfs. But I always prefer grannys homemade to anything else.
