The answer really depends on your situation.
To many people the best credit card is the one that has the lowest interest rate because they are going to spend more than they can afford to pay each month and so they are going to actually have to pay monthly interest on their unpaid balance. They are basically taking out a high interest rate loan, and so if they can get one for 15% instead of 20% it will reduce the amount of money they are throwing out the window each month in interest payments to their credit card company.
To other people who don't spend more on their credit cards than they can afford to pay each month and who don't carry an unpaid balance that causes them to throw money out the window with interest payments, the best credit card is typically one that provides them with useful benefits like frequent flyer points or hotel points or Cabela's points or something like that.
If you plan to carry a monthly balance and give the credit card company some of your hard earned money each month in interest payments, then get the credit card with the lowest interest rate you can find.
If you plan to pay it off each month in full then get one that has a points program that will be of use to you.
Getting $50 a year in Cabela's points does you no good if you carry an unpaid balance each month and end up making $300 in interest payments on that card.
If you want to improve your credit rating then actually getting a credit card and paying it off in full each month will help in time.
If you want to "stick it" to your credit card company then pay your bill in full each month. They hate that.

WE have not had a CREDIT card in nearly 6-7 years but have DEBIT cards with the visa or master card logo. Never a issue and credit scores of high 700's and mid 800's! Also, travel internationally with zero issues.

Pull your credit report/score, fix any problems/errors, and do a lot of research on minimum scores for acceptance on the cards you're looking at. Since you've applied and been denied three times recently I would hold off for a while before applying for anymore.
There are CC forums where you can do a TON of research on what cards will work for you...The more rejections the lease likely someone will give you one. Honestly.........you need to go to Financial Peace University. www.DaveRamsey.com

I'm surprised no one has mentioned USAA Mastercard, Visa, or AMEX. Low interest rates and pretty lenient grace periods. They were voted one of the top credit card companies few years back.
Amex itself is good but not every place accepts them due to their high fees and policies.
Other than that, I would go with credit union credit card.

This is good. Everytime you apply they pull your credit, and a bunch of credit requests will lower your score.
Revolving accounts (credit cards) account for 30% of your credit score. So having at least one does have importance. A few years ago a student loan mistake dropped my score below 700. I went to a credit union and took out a secured loan of $2000 (Secured by my truck worth $17,000). Most lending companies should jump on such a loan. Put the money in my savings and made payments on the note for 6 months. Paid it off after the 6 months and I was back in the 700s.

I cant recommend a card but when you get one use it wisely by paying 100% of bill off every month. The right card can provide nice rewards.
Not to sure all of Dave Ramseys advice is the best.
I have gotten many free plane tickets from my citi card. Sure is nice taking a family of 4 on vacation without having to fork over cash for those tickets.

I spend money when I have it; not before.
Spending money you don't have is never a good idea.
It looks like Landrover abides by these same rules; and we have all seen his trophy room.
Good advice from a smart man.....
