I know landowners who consider that 4 yo 8 a cull and I know landowners who consider him a breeder buck but they are located in vastly different areas of the State. Landowners manage as they see fit.

You wil have many chances at 140-150 inch deer... That 150 is one if your true chances at a monster. The odds are never in your favor of killing a huge buck... But when you have one going and kill it halfway there... You have much less chance.

Like i said... If the worry is hunter mortality that's one thing... But those numbers are too high for a natural mortality average.
Lets use your quoted theory of basing it off of an individual deer...

This deer has a possibility to put on 30 inches???? I can see the other deer posted here that were lost having the ability... but a main frame 8 with no additional points going 180?? Im thinking thats a stretch.

Now these other deer posted that have mulitple points, drops, kickers and additional points ya... they could put on 30 inches in 3 years (by 7.5)...

But a main frame 8 putting on 30 inches?.... I'd like to feed the others that fell instead of a main frame 8.

Most of my mature bucks, 5.5 or older, are going to have extra points regardless of the number of points on their main frame. I have a really hard time finding a mature buck that is typical. A few years ago, I had a main frame 9 point that I guess scored around 140. He was 5.5 and I tried to get a number of hunters on him that season and failed. I will tell you it was a great thing I failed. The next year he came back with all kinds of trash and scored 169 and change as a 6.5 yr old. He was easily identifiable not only by his frame but also he was missing half of his left front foot. The older they get the more trash they grow has been my experience.

Btw, I dont think Encinal was saying he would be a slick 180 mainframe 8 pt but I'll leave that to him to clarify.

              A 150" 8 pointer as a 4 year old? With 5" g-4's that deer is 160. At 4...

It's about frame. Deer add and subtract mainframe points all the time... If a deer scores 150 as a 4 year old 8... That deer is in the top 1% of big framed deer for his age group on my ranch.

              I would take 10 150" 8 point 4 year olds before I took a 145" 10 point 4 year old.

this is the best buck on my place, as a slick 10 4 year old last year and a 5 year old 12pt this past season, i am guessing he put on about 15"...i didnt pass on him on purpose this year, never saw him, but am really looking forward to the summer to see what he picks up at 6...
