Hey Sip, from what I see in recent threads u guys are doing everything right on the supplemental feeding and harvesting. At 4.5 years he should have been as healthy as any deer in your herd. Did u find evidence of what he fell to? Was he just weak and possibly run down from the previous rut, injured or what? Predator?
    That's a raw deal.

We wanted to see what this deer would turn into. He was spending 80% of his time solely on my place.

At 4.5 an 8 was all he was gonna be, he shows no signs of sprouting any other points... He could have been a bigger 8 at 5.5...but he could also die before 5.5. It's a calculated risk passing deer, especially a 4.5 year old 8, each year older the risk gets higher he will die without a hunter involved.

Sometimes you roll the dice and lose.

Given all that I passed a big 8 like that one one of my places.... Saw him once and only once during rut... Buti was hunting a big 12 (for the 3rd year in a row in a 1 buck county) he will probably die before season.. And I never got a chance to kill him this year.

Not in the above crowd but the majority of the "nice" bucks we lose are 3.5 year olds. We think these are the bucks that are trying to find a place in the hierarchy on our farm and get their butts whipped by multiple mature bucks while looking for their spots.

Because my deer have been on 8 yrs of protein now and Im seeing significant less teethwear for the bucks we killed this year, Im moving my age targets starting this year. 7pts and less will be taken at 4.5 and older, 8 pts at 5.5 and older, and 9 pts and up will be taken at 7.5 and up. This is just a general guideline. Some with really big frames might get to live longer even if they only have 8 pts and some small framed 10+pt bucks will probably get whacked a little earlier, especially if I have history with them and know what their frame has looked like for a number of years.

He would have been dead if'n I seen him in person during the season. Sucks to lose deer to a fence for sure...I just found a big fat preggo mature doe hung in the fence the other day. She had just expired...she had one "toe" trapped in the barbed wire. What a way to go...
