Great point Jeff, we consider 4.5 to be mature on 22k acres. We lose a lot of mature bucks every year do to mother nature. Its sucks but it is just the way it is.

is that because you lose so many, u try to get them before mother nature does? this isnt the great north, bucks will make it to 5.5+ down here pretty easily.

be interesting to see someone like encinal/FCT/RTP/ELGATO post some ages with dead bucks they have found.

when your 50/50 mule deer and whitetail with a close buck to doe ratio it makes a difference. the winters are pretty hard out west where i hunt and the bucks get very run down from the rut. 4.5 is a mature buck on our place.

do the MD and WT compete? i get the close ratio and increased fighting aspect, just curious how the MD play in. not trying to be a smartace or difficult, never hunted with MD and am interested in the dynamic.

the WT are more agressive, as they will breed anything in heat. I would say we lose more to injury because of fighting, but mostly WT. Most the mature mule deer are lost due to the deer being run down from the rut since the mule deer do not hit the peak of the rut unitl mid to late december when the weather is getting hard and feed is at a minimum. Its just natures way of keep the heard down.
