Always, but I would look into other areas before worrying about that. Deal with any leaks and such first. Fill the coolant and monitor it for a while.

maybe...but with a blown head gasket you'll either be getting water in the oil, oil in the water or exhaust in the water or oil heating it and running hot.

300k, heck, be surprised it's not knocking yet....

the mod motors of that vintage are known to consume oil without the typical signs everyone is used to....I believe they just burn it up during combustion...which is probably what is happening with yours...rings are probably worn pretty good allowing oil to stay on cylinder walls and get burned during combustion

best bet is to research on one of the f150 forums that are out there....you won't be the only one...

Well it's not knocking, that's for sure. I do hear a very fast paced ticking noise when I accelerate or put a load on the motor. I don't hear anything while at idle or cruising. A buddy said lifter??? Not sure. I'm sure it's multiple problems by now.

Most likely an exhaust manifold leak for the ticking. My chevy work truck does it now at 75k miles, but it gets mileaged out in another 5k, so I won't be fixing it.

YES! valve guide on exhaust valve. It should still be burning in the converter though.

Ok so I actually got behind it while it was running now. It does smoke a little whe I give it gas! Also a little bit of water is coming out of the exhaust pipe when reved up. Head gasket?

Sounds like PCV valve as said above.

some water is normal....with gasoline exhaust, the makeup will be a bit of nitrogen, h2o vapor and co2

Correct. Passenger side on the V10. Right in the middle.

And as another noted, the PCV valve hasn't been known to be a large problem in that engine. It's mostly the 6.8 and some the 5.4.

Ford says a quart every 900 miles is within spec in the 6.8 V10 also. So as another noted, these engine just use some oil. But in the V10 anyway that's often fixed with a new PCV valve.

But yours sounds like a lot.

and whatever you do, DO NOT run any engine cleaner inside that thing...it will blow up within a week....there is burnt oil in all the cracks and crevices holding that thing together...lol

I'd bet that ticking noise on a load is the converter. My 98 f150 did it forever until I got them replaced, but it was a 4.6
