It's been a long time since I've crate trained a pup but here's my $0.02.

Like has been said above....cover the crate at night with a blanket, sheet or towel. Take him out right before you go to bed and then he's there for the night. Put the crate in another room so he can't smell/hear you.

I'm not a big fan of feeding him in the crate or putting food treats in the crate.

Also, I would definitely NOT give a negative reinforcement once he's in the crate for whining or crying. This is his sanctuary and you don't want him imprinted with any negatives associated with it.

Stick with it. He'll get it!

Any reason he can't just roam free?

My dog is crate trained, but it's in storage now because we never use it. Just an idea.
He's not to the point where I trust him unsupervised for long. And I keep them crated in the truck because its safer.

Broke mine from doing it with a water pistol. He barked, I squirted. He learned.

We put a shock collar on them and say kennel and as soon as his foot steps in that kennel let go of the shock. It teaches them that the kennel is a safe place to be. But with the winning thing we built a rack on our four wheeler that 4 dogs can hook up too and wear their asses out and he will be happy to lay down in that kennel
