trailing a wounded Deer

I Shot a deer last year and after many hours of searching I called the warden to see how much the fine would be for using a trailing dog. He wouldn't give me a direct answer but he did tell me that some bow hunting group here in Texas was trying to get a bill passed that would allow trailing statewide. Does anyone have any info on this?

I'm a police officer...but I will say this. If there was ever a law that needs to be ignored, it's that stupid law. I know why it was written (running deer with dogs), but any officer can tell the difference between a pack of walker and bluetick hounds bawling on a trail and a blue lacy or wirehair daschund on a lead working a blood trail. Makes me mad just thinking about it.

I would be willing to bet that very few, maybe 0, tickets have been written for that.

My lacy would never track a wounded deer in a restricted county...but he may end up trailing what I thought was a hog

We have someone at Texas Parks and Wildlife who is working very hard on the issue.

Me: I just shot my first deer, a 10 point, with a bow, and I cant find it.. i have looked for 7 hours. How much of a fine would I get if I got caught trailing a deer with a trailing dog, on a leash? Would you confiscate my truck, gun, meat, everything or would I just get a ticket?
him: Well this is the first time i have been asked this, I cant answer that question but I will tell you that the juice would be worth the squeeze.. and I will tell you there are no state wardens in that area right now..

I gave him a call a few hours alter and let him know that i couldnt get ahold of the buddy that has a trailing dog, and i appreciated his honesty about the situation. He was willing to come help me look but by this time it was flooding and way after dark. That is when he told me they were trying to change the law..

I wouldn't be worried about the warden that I called messing with me for it but there are new wardens that just want to look at black and white.. No sense is used.. Just like some rookie cops that I am sure you have to slap around a little...

That's really cool of the Warden. It would be great if East Tx would allow tracking dogs.

they dont even have to do it statewide, just make it legal in Newton, Jasper, lee and Nac counties.. lol

i do agree with you on this stupid law,, but i also understand why,, to many long time doggers will still be turning them out claiming they were blood trailing,,
