    Unknown malady for my Weim

Looking for some help from the GS . . . My 8 year old Weimaraner recently started exhibiting symptoms that seemed stroke related. He began stumbling up the stairs, slipping and falling, standing on his front wrist (paw turned under) and general weakness. Vet ruled out stroke, took blood and now we are pending results. I've been around dogs my whole life and never had one start with symptoms like this without trauma or some sort of triggering event. It's breaking my heart to see him struggling like this. If anyone has any thoughts, then I'd sure appreciate the feedback.

I wouldn't take stroke completely off the table. A lot depends on the blood work. Additional testing includes different fungal titers, CSF tap, and potentially imaging of the head (CT/MRI). It definitely sounds neurologic. There are other disease processes that can mimic intracranial disease, but the blood work will help rule a number of them out. It is progressing? How long has it been going on?

I've owned Weimars my whole life and this one is new to me also. I'll be praying for your buddy though.

Diabetic??? My dad has had a couple bird dogs that were diabetic and he would have to take some powdered donuts to the field with him in case they went into a fit or something.

I know your pain. My 13 yr old Weim, Tess, has shown the same symtoms. Disorientation, balance on standing or walking. She has loss of hearing and decreased vision. In the last year she's dropped from 83# to 60#. She's skin and bones.

Thanks everyone. Been going on for a little over a week now. Just watched him try to take a drink from his bowl only to have his paw slide it away from him. Praying for the blood test results. Going to put bag balm on his pads to try and soften them up to maybe give him better traction. Willing to try anything at this point

Has your Vet taken any x-rays of your dog's neck? The symptoms resemble something I've seen in several large breed dogs called cervical spondylomyelopathy, or wobblers syndrome. If it hasn't already been ruled out, it may be worth investigating. In the meantime, I would restrict your dog's activity and use a harness instead of a collar when you walk him. It may not help, but it sure can't hurt.

Thanks Cheryl. Vet mentioned wobblers syndrome yesterday. Hoping to avoid a trip to the neurologists if possible

This is my first Weim so I am very curious to know what the final diagnosis is. Please post if you are able.

My 14 year old Weim was having seizures 4 months ago; I thought the end had finally come. A friend of ours suggested something called Baileys Blend. The seizures stopped almost immediately ( having one a day average).
I know its coming soon, but I have trouble talking about it. Wish you the best in finding out problem.

Blood tests came back perfectly normal which is both good and bad. He had a couple of falls yesterday and wasn't able to get himself up. No real improvement in the symptoms nor a real decline either. Ordered the Bailey's Blend and am willing to give the homeopathic route a chance. Sure was rough trying to explain to my 4 year old little girl that her buddy was sick.

You also might try this. You can get it at vitamin shop. It's like $15 for 90 pills. I give my Weimar 3/day. Helps with their coat, eye sight, joints, brain function, etc. it's a great multivitamin.
