Never understood the "wait until after the first freeze" or "Dont eat them in the summertime" tales. It is supposed to relate to worms. Well, if a rabbit has worms those worms are INSIDE that warm blooded rabbit. Unless the freeze kills the rabbit, it aint gonna touch them worms that are all warm and snuggly inside of that rabbit.

Kill em when you want to... some will have worms and some wont.

Man, you wasted a perfectly good rabbit. Only way a human can catch this is from the actual cleaning of a rabbit(this isnt only found in rabbits though) or eating it raw. Once it's cooked you cant catch anything and Rabbit Fever in North America is very very very rare. He may have caught it from not cleaning his hands good after processing the rabbit.

In Louisiana that is all there is. They are just big cottontails, but good in a crockpot

My Uncle and Grandpa raised Beagles in Longview and we chased swamp rabbits all over LeTourneau and Talley bottoms. Ate dozens of them and Uncle made sausage from them also.

I had just cleaned it bare handed too. I did some lookin around online before I hucked it and figured it was fine but it still was not worth the risk to me. He said he didnt clean it, just ate it and got sick. But what I want to try and havent yet is squirrel, I keep hearing its good.

Man, i've eatin to many to count. Here where i live people treat squirrel hunting like South Texas treats deer hunting. Businesses and schools actually close the Friday before squirrel season and all HS football games are played thursday night. It may seem crazy but its a tradition i hope never dies here. If there is one weekend when every man and kid is in the woods here its opening weekend of squirrel season. It teaches kids alot about woodsmanship imo.

That's all we shot growing up. Until 2 minutes ago I thought they were cottontails. either way they are delicious.

The first animal I ever hunted was a swamp rabbit. Was invited to a squirrel hunt and no squirrels were seen. We brought stuff to make stew so later in the day when I happened upon a rabbit, that primal hunting instinct kicked in and needless to say, we had some very yummy swamp rabbit stew for dinner. It was a bit old, but turned out tender after slow cooking in a cast iron pot for about 1.5 hours. It was my first hunt and how I picked my GS name.
