    Rifle question... .22 hornet

    On my way to Wood and Feather, I stopped at Tomball Pawn Shop to look around. They had a box full of TC Encore barrels. I found a .22 hornet. What are your experiences w/ the .22 hornet? How does it compare to a .22 mag? Is it worth the extra money for ammo to shoot the . 22 hornet vs. .22 mag?

    Hornet is hotter, but more expensive to shoot. Still just a varmint gun in my opinion. Not cheap enough to be a plinker.

      I have one and never use it. It is not accurate enough, for my liking, at 100 yards (1 1/2 - 2" group). I've even tried finding a good handloading recipe for it with no luck.

        Hornet is small accurate and leagal to dispatch a deer.
        Its cheap enough to reload.

          I can't answer personally, but my brother-in-law will not part with his Hornet. He's customized it and says it's good for 3" groups out to 400 yards. I know all the prairie dogs in CO are scared to death. I'm sure my comment does it no justice either.

            I have a .22 mag now. Don't shoot it much. If I do shoot it, it's usually used to shoot jack rabbits, tree rats or pigs at close range. A .22 mag placed between the ear and the eye will roll up a pig like a dirty booger! If I did get a .22 hornet, I would probably get rid of the .22 mag.

                  I shoot a speer 1439 pointed hollow point. 11.7 gr 1174 and a small pistol primer.

                  Yes its a compressed load but well below the pressures for my gun.

                    Dan;
                    I have one that you can play with if you want to. I also have a 22 mag. and a 222. The ole hornet is fun to shoot, but like the others have said, it can't hang with the 222, and the shells cost a lot more than the 22 mag. I thought I would shoot hogs with it, and I did, but it's a lot easier to bait the hog traps and stay in the camp and bbq and drink cold beer. I use a 22 pistol the next mourning when I run the traps.

                      I haven't shot mine in over 6 or 7 years. I am in love with the .204

                        A 22 hornet was my very first deer rifle. I was 9 when I got it. It was more than enough gun to kill the neighbors cow.

                            Hey Dan might wanna look into the .17's as well. I know mine is a tack driver and the hogs and yotes hate it.
