I want to find a beach house to rent way out, away from the crowds. That is what I keep telling my wife. We have done, SPI. To many people for me.

Rockport has the cleanest and prettiest beach in Texas. It is different from Port Aransas, however, because it is a bay beach and not the gulf. No big crashing waves. Water is much clamer and shallower. Lots of nice sand and shallow water to play in. And Rockport is a cool little place to spend some time. Neat little shops fro the wife, good food, festivals every month, art, entertainment, etc...Lots of Austin influence there makes it a pretty neat place to visit.

Oh I have plenty of private/boat access spots in Port A.

North Padre Island from the open air cafe on Bob Hall Pier July, 29, 2012. Danged ol dirty water.

South Padre to crazy for families? Here is some of the craziness my family enjoys! Spring Break may be a different story, but there are several months in the summer that dont include spring break.

I'd go with South Padre cuz that's where i've grown up going to being from the valley. Avoid spring break if you're planning a family vacation, you'd still be safe but not worth waiting in traffic forever to get anywhere and there are some x-rated scenes not safe for the kids lol. but summer time is perfect for families. if you can, head down during the fall. its a coin toss as to whether the water will be warm or cold, but good fishing and water is much much clearer.

PINS Padre Island National Seashore. Way more fisherman here and less swimmers the farther you go down the less people in some places you can look both ways and see a couple miles of just beach no one in sight. Can't remember for sure but I think it's only 10 bucks a day.

Galveston the Board walk made the Island alot better.
Port A is also a very nice family place

While he was not my real uncle...my uncle Jack had a beach house at Port A the entire time I was growing up. We could use it anytime it was not rented. The water there just does not compare to Fort Walton. You may have altready stated this and I missed it but have you been to the emerald coast?

^ assuming you have never been to SPI?^

                                Actually that was for arrowsmack.

Come on man. In that case Florida and California beaches are uninhabitable compared to the Mayan Riviera.
