    It really boils down to personal preference. I choose 9mm the majority of the time for more capacity and less recoil which typically lends itself to quicker follow up shots if needed.
    This. Plus 9mm ammo is cheaper so you can practice more.

      .40 or .45 that is the question

      My take- first thing to discuss is shoot ability. Doesn't matter caliber if you can't run the gun defensively? In a full sized weapon a 45 is fine. Compact I think 40 is max. Sub compact 9mm. Depends on what size weapon you will "always" carry. Personally I carry a pm9. I also have a pm40 and 45 but they do not run as well in this small platform. If you get into pocket pistol size them 380. I shot a Rohrbaugh r9 and it was tough. Now you can learn to run anything but I think when you jump caliber size up above the size of weapon it takes a lot of practice. I shot the pm45 2-3000 rounds and can still run the pm9 better.

          There is a reason why Law Enforcement trusts .40 over 45. mostly to do with mag capacity! I Love a .45 to death and carry it over all others in the field, but never concealed, I would rather have a couple more rounds ready to go.

            Beretta P4xsc "STORM" in 9mm. By the time the STI .45 is ready, I might even have a 40 DOH!

            All I can say is....IT'S A ZOO ON THE STREETS RIGHT NOW WOW!

              You can't have to many! It's like women and shoes... You need several options.

                    Definitive there. If it will move a 5 pound block of gelatin, it will put them on their butt every time.

                    Gotta love the internet.
                    This. Knockdown power is what you're looking for in defensive round. A stopping power. .45 hands down. For precise shooting, 9mm is way to go. Easy follow up shot. Less kick.

                        I learned a lot from this thread. I had no idea the 9 and the 45 were so close.

                            Shoot the .40 , It wont crack your ear drums when you choot without ear protection.
                            If we are not going to talk about shot placement then all are equal.
                            If you can snatch the 9 out and 3 pop to point of aim with a gut full of adrenaline;
                            it will do the job. The .45 might be a bit more effective with poor shot placement.....
                            We are talking about shooting hogs right ?
