I would say magazine capacity. I assume whatever make model it is you are looking at offers both? Really, it's all about shot placement and training when it come to ballistics.
I'd go 40 IMO. Now I'm a diehard 45 fan, but not much difference in velocities and energy and you can usually get a few more rounds in the same size pistol as a 45.
And I don't even own a 40 but I've shot several and that will be my next buy if I buy a mid to compact frame pistol
I carry a .40. I'd recommend a 9mm, and if I didn't have thousands of rounds of ammo, reloading equipment, and several .40's, I'd be carrying a 9.
Why? Modern defense ammo is great. Round placement is what's important, just like in hunting. More ammo = more chances to hit where it counts. Obviously there comes a point where you do want more power, and I'd say that's anything smaller than 9mm. I would never carry a .380, though it's better than nothing.
