.40 or .45 that is the question

There is not enough difference to really even warrant arguing the effectiveness of 9mm vs 40 vs 45.

It really boils down to personal preference. I choose 9mm the majority of the time for more capacity and less recoil which typically lends itself to quicker follow up shots if needed.

It is historically informative in that the Miami FBI shootout led to the invention of the .40S&W.

The rest was just opinion and for the most part unproven or meaningless.

I own a Springfield XD 45. My reason at the time was my father-in-law reloaded 45 or 9mm, so I didnt want to get a 40s&w if I couldn't have reloads, but now I am reloading my own bullets..... I carry a 9mm at work and hate it with a passion I feel like I am shooting a bb gun. I love the 45cal bullet for the impact and scare factor. I had a person at a gun shop show me the differents in hollow point bullets from 357, 9mm, 40s&w, and 45cal. It was impressive the size a 45cal bullet after impact, it looks like the size of a quarter and the 40 look like a small nickle.... I feel if I have to shoot some one I want them to know they have been shot which everything points to that with a 45. However, this is all my opinion.....

The 9mm and .40 are too close for me to justify the cost of a .40. If you're not carrying 9mm, carry .45. And vice versa

              I'm not a fan of .40s&w

The .380 and 9mm are too close, one has less powder...the 9mm cost less to shoot than both the .40 and .45..

9mm thru 45 have relatively same stopping power.

All you need is .380 and it's the cheapest to own and shoot.

The .45 is not as snappy as most .40's, depending on the frame. You don't get the barrel rise on recoil.

              I have .380, .9mm, and .40 in carry frames.

This and this is also why I moved down to .380 LCP.

Re: .40 or .45 that is the question

The main thing to consider is cost of practice! 9mm is waaaay cheaper than .40 or .45.

You need to be proficient with your weapon. So factor in cost of shooting into your decision.

I reload .45s and sell it to friends at $15/box. That's why most of them carry .45s. If you don't have access to reloads, shoot 9mm. You'll save a TON in ammo costs.

The .40 usually has way more rounds and usually in a smaller package with the same ballistics. The .40 normally costs less than the .45.

What you then have are two rounds that are basically the same in damage caused on target but one carries more rounds in a smaller package and costs less.

The .45 does sound superior so you can convince yourself that it is better, making that definitely an option.

Where are you getting your .380 ammo? ( I'm not trying yo be an A hole, I'm dead serious.) Most places I see .380 is 5-6bucks more than 9mm.

I definitely agree with you on not much difference on the stopping power with 9-45. There's a little difference but not much.

It's mainly personal preference and cost is a big factor for me.

Im not sure if it is a curse or a blessing that I have alot of hogs on my place in Jack county. It does allow me the opportunity to shot em with lots of different guns n broadheads. The ones I have seen em hit with my 9 n 40 and keep on truckin. when I hit em with my 45 they stop, drop n roll

I have a 13 round mag for my XD45 and I have the same amount of recoil action using a 45cal 230gr hallow point bullet at has my duty carry 9mm HP pistol, but it all about gun control and the type of trigger. You have to practice and learn your gun action, also more bullets in a mag doesn't help if you can't shoot. Plus why type to shoot at a person with a 9mm that impact hole is the size of a pea and they could live from it and/or may not know they been shot, which you have to aim more. When I can shoot 13 rounds of 45cal that the impact size is the size of a quarter and they person is going to know they have been hit, plus in a fire fight I dont have to aim as much just get the bullet in the general area. Plus I believe throw less lead around, my motto one shot one kill.

That's practice ball ammo. Not defense rounds
