Anybody Have a Deer Protein Pellet They Recommend Throwing from a Timed Spin Feeder?

Hi Everybody,

My budget won't all me to feed proteain "free choice" from a gravity type feeder like it seems most deer proteins are designed to be fed.

This said I am thinking about mixing some corn with a deer protein pellet - and throwing it from my corn timed feeder. I figure its maybe better for the deer than just feeding all corn + it gives the deer a second choice to eat one it hits the ground.

This said do any of you out there do this already? If so what ratio do you mix of corn to protein pellet? And my main question is - what protein pellet do you recommend that the deer will like to eat - and that won't mildue or clog up my timed spinning thrower? Also if you know the price per bag - I would love to know - just so I have an idea of what to expect.

FYI - I hunt outside between Columbus and La Grange (live near Humble / Atascocita) - in case you have feed stores you recommend.

The most common brand I have found is Record Rack Golden Nuggets which sound like the are designed to be thrown from a spin cast feeder (which I like). I would rather find a brand thats designed the same way - but perhaps higher in protein content and better nutrition for the deer.

Be sure to drop your spin plate a bit and reduce your feed time to account for the higher flow.

Don't do pellets your timers will get gummed up and ruined. See if your feed store can do a corn and soybean mix.

even without rain the powder will destroy equipment made to throw corn, it'll end up on the ground and mostly feed birds and God forbid it rains.

Actually if you do a search there were some threads by Tuthdoc on the subject from several years back. We feed a product called Spin Cast. (Which is what Tuthdoc was feeding I believe) It is a protein corn mix that is produced by Surefed Feeds. The pellets are smaller and they have some sort of rain shield on them. Now if it is soaking wet they are going to ruin, but a heavy dew or a sprinkle does not seem to bother it. We have had minimal problems with clogging feeders. We simply lowered the spinners a little. The price is about $1 or so higher than a bag of corn and the protein is 20+%. Might be worth looking into. Not sure if you can get it in your area or not.

Been Mixing 50/50 Corn to Protien and throwing it from a Spin Cast for years. Wet, Dry it flys every time.

I hunt in La grange and I feed Golden nuggets and iy does clog a bit, however if you get the mix right 1 part pellet to 3 parts corn, should do fine. Mix it where each pellet can't touch another pellet. Just make sure you put a rain shield about 2 in wide around the bottom too, a strip. also make sure your feeder does not have leaks from the bolts holding on the legs. low spin and high gap !

Doing a spin cast will bring the pigs around so beware.

I haven't had luck with any of the above mentioned tactics. Just bite the bullet and buy a protein feeder. You can probably get one used this time of year.

ive thrown antlermax watershield out of spin feeders and didnt have any problems. imo you wont get enough out of it to make it worth it the place i did it i had one mature buck that would come every time and run the others off. so basically i was only benefitting one deer.

Have been told numerous times that if you are not feeding free choice you are just wasting your money spinning protein looking for improvements on your mature deer...
