Yes you can if there is a misalignment or issue with the other jaw. We have yet to see a photo of the entire jaw. I shot a deer earlier this year tha had two different wear patterns on each side.

That being said, based on the one jaw photo I would conclude that that deer is 6.5 and possibly 7.5 depending on the range and forage conditions in his home area.

Yes. A lot. And I have seen deer that I have watched for years (sometimes 4-6 years) and their teeth only show 3.5. This is why I do not put a lot of faith in teeth aging. It is simply one of the many things you can use to age a deer.

I am not familiar with DeerAge.com but I am assuming they use the cementum annuli method? If so, that method has been proven to only be 70% accurate at best. I believe we are more accurate than that on our own.

Ah ha.. That can make a tremendous difference to jaw wear on the other side especially if the missing tooth happened early in life. Not that is the case here.

How effective are each of the methods for aging Deer? (Cementum Annuli and Wear/Eruption)

In a study done by Kenneth L. Hamlin et al. of the Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks ( Journal of Wildlife Management 64(2):441-449) accuracy rates of cementum annuli were 97.3% for elk through age 14, 92.6% for mule deer through age 14, and 85.1% for white-tailed deer through 9 years old.

We have completed processing on the whitetail deer specimen that you submitted on January 15, 2013 for forensic aging. We promised to have the results back to you by February 28, 2013.The cementum-annuli analysis has determined that the age of “Guthrey’s 8pt” is 7.5 years. Nice trophy! The cementum lines on this specimen are very distinct. We will be sending you a paper copy of this e-mail via the US Post Office. If you have any questions, or if we can be of additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. Again, thank you for doing business with us.

                          Sincerely,

I have seen it many times. It happened this year again on my place. One of my guides brought in a management buck in. As I looked at the deer laying on the ground at the skinning rack I was thinking it is 3 yr old but dont say anything. The next day, I did the scoring and pulled the jaw. He was 7.5+. The best way to age deer is to know your deer herd and track as many bucks from as young an age as possible. Aging is for sure an inexact science and we all try to do the best we can.

I would guess the jaw the OP posted to be at least 6.5. I call all the ages on my place and I would call this one 7.5 on my place. Most important thing is regardless of what the tooth wear may be, it is for sure a mature buck.
