When I shot this deer I didn’t think he would be older than 4.5 based on his body features.

The jaw was taken from this buck. And I agree on age based on his teeth. Other member still says we are crazy!

At least 6.5. The guy saying 2.5 has no business trying to age a deer IMO.

body features are simply a rule of thumb. just like with people. i can say that most men over 40 generally have less muscle mass and bigger belly than a 25 year old....but thats not always true. normally correct but always exceptions. the teeth are the true determining factor....imo. Disclaimer: I am not a biologist but have been doing taxidermy for 20 years and age btween 100 and 150 bucks per year....so i deffinatly could be wrong....

another thing on this buck is that the antlers are pourous, soft, weak, and lightweight (almost chalky). i generally only see this in 6.5 and up deer. For the record...i dont care either way....i think it is a nice buck and would have shot it too. i was just please to see the age since most of the other deer killed were much youger. a little discouraging that his antlers were not bigger by this age, but a lot of factors could have played a role in this.

This deer assumming natural wild diet and maybe corn only gets to 5.5 for me. His 5th and 5th teeth still have too much crown and dentine is too narrow to get to 6.5. Plus, at 6.5 there is severe wear on the 3rd tooth that generates an infundibulim triangle and this jaw has little wear on the 3rd tooth. Here is a very good guideline on aging by the jawbone and one used by the TPWD for that purpose.

Check out the vebal and graphic examples in this paper for 5.5 to 6.5 y.o. deer. This jaw appears to be a classic 5.5 year old.
