Yes, you can. For the most part it is a simple swap. Most gun safes are rated mainly for fire protection. The issues that might come up when changing out the lock are on high security safes such TL-15's, TL-30's, TRTLX-6's. If you are looking for a good electronic lock....AMSEC ESL20's are my first choice and La Gard is the second. ( You can also use another spin dial lock.)

I had the Amsec ESL10 installed on mine. With the cost of the lock, plus labor, plus a service call, it cost me right at $450.

I jsut priced it today at two place.

$435 one place do not remember the brand

$485 next place it was a two battery La Gard. about $125 less for the basic La Gard.

Safe cost less than that several years ago.

I had 2 of the locks replaced on my Winchester safe in less than 2 years. took me over 30 minutes to get in it the final time.

I finally got fed up and replaced it with an amsec digital lock. Much happier now.
We had the same issue with our safe and changed to the digital lock. All is well now.

Thanks for all the tips and advice on this guys!!

The lock/bolts throw by pulling up and I have never changed the combo(I don't think my Uncle did either).
Other than that I haven't tried the trick by going to the # +/- the combo number.
