So I know a lady that lost her job several weeks back. She hadn't been at this job long at all, when she was blind-sided at the end of a Monday shift with termination papers stating she was making too many mistakes. Whether she actually was or not, isn't known, but what is known is they let a good employee go, and right before Christmas at that.
She wasn't given any REAL specifics as to why she was being let go, only that "they had discussed these issues previously" apparently with little or no improvement.
It's what happened several weeks later that made me type this out.
Unsure of how the bills were going to get paid, let alone buy the gifts she would normally buy this time of year, she hopped right on the "unemployment" bus and got that process started. Her family made cut-backs in all the "extra areas" to be sure they weren't blowing money that didn't need to be spent, and she started searching for jobs the next day.
Two weeks go by and she gets a check from the previous employer. It's for 55hrs of vacation. $600 + that she sure could've used, but she knew she hadn't been there long enough to accrue this kind of "vacation pay" so she called and left a message for the boss.
Several days later, when he got around to returning her call, he was much suprised by the reason for it. He said, "Not many people would've said anything about this?" He was going to look into it and get back with her, but canceled the check in the meantime.
She got a call yesterday from him stating payroll had royally hosed up EVEYONE'S vacation time, and he was still working on it, but it looked like she was due about half of what the check was for.
There is no telling how much money she saved this company by informing him of the mistake
, because she is honest. Will he compensate her for that? Probably not, but her reward, while not monetary is knowing she did the right thing.
Integrity is what you do when noone's looking!
