Depends on your barrel's twist rate, the heaviest and longest 7mm VLD's (180gr and up) need faster custom twists on the order of 1/8 to stabilize. The 168 Berger is about as much as my Remington 7 Mag 700 Classic with factory barrel will tolerate, and it shoots 150 through 160gr bullets pretty well. My longest shot on game with it was a 412yd shot on a whitetail, using a 154gr Hornady Interbond at 3090fps. A long range shooter (whose opinion I respect) recently gave me what I consider some sound advice for my 7RM - run 160gr Nosler Accubonds and enough H1000 for 2900-3000fps as a good all around long-range hunting load.

Mostly, you'll need good, adjustable glass and a rangefinder to reach way out there with any consistency. I'm currently having a Remington 700 action rebarreled to .284 Winchester for use as a dedicated long-range hunting rig because I just don't like 7RM level recoil. It'll wear a Huskemaw 5-20x scope, and I'll be using 140gr Berger bullets. Should be capable of 800yd performance, assuming I have an accurate distance to reference for scope elevation adjustment.

I reload. I have tried the Berger 168 VLDs and they shot great. But ended up putting a muzzle break on and for some reason they wouldnt group under 1.5". So I found the Hornady 139 Gr. GMX and the 154 Gr. SST shoot best at just under 3/4" .
But honestly you will just have to see what your gun likes.

How do you like that huskemaw scope?

I like stuff in the 160 plus range. But as stated. Let your gun decide.

Really like it, shot it side-by-side with a comparable Nightforce and considered the clarity and brightness better, and I liked the simplified hunting reticle with windage hold-offs a LOT more than the NF.....as well as the elevation turret marked in yards. Of course, YMMV.......

I like the idea of the windage dope with regular cross hairs but have never looked thru it to compare glass. I think it will be my next scope. Do you mind if I ask where you got it at?

                          Berger 168 VLD
                          And
                          Hornady 162 Amax

The 162 amax has the flattest and the highest wind resistance
But my rifle for some reason likes the 168 berger and the 168 SMK

Mine loves Federal Premium 160 grain Nosler Partions .... Shoots a clover leaf... The bullets mushroom beautifully and do not fragment. Only thing I shoot out of it.

I use to load and shoot 162 gr HPBT Sierra. I was in Baileys picking up some reloading stuff and got to picking Bill Bailey's brain he had known me since I was a kid. He sat a box of Horandy 139 gr SPBT on the counter and said this is all you need for white tail in Texas. This was about 30 years ago I the rest is history. Have stretched them out just beyond 300 yrds confirmed with a range finder on deer and hogs with great results.
