My daughter made minimum wage plus tips. That was 6 or 7 years ago.

My youngest son works there so tipping is common practice in our house now. Their hourly wages are reduced if they make over a certain amount in tips.

I used to waitress so I tip really good at a place where someone is waiting on me, but wait staff don't get paid as much as fast food employees! People always give me a hard time about it but its just something I have personal opinions about! I feel like so if workers do try hard but so do employees at other fast food places most of the time harder no one else expects tips.
They are doing a job you said you used to do, waitress, and sometimes in the cold and rain.
Your comparing apples to oranges when you compare MickyD and BK employees to them as far as pay.
Personally, I'm just happy she is wanting to work for her spending money instead of hitting me up for it

I remember seeing a sign on a Sonic 4-5 years ago. Said now hiring $7-$8/hr.

Don't know if it was just that one or all Sonics.

I used to tip but I rarely have cash now days. I've always wondered why they don't give you the option of a tip when paying with a card.

At sonic i normally tip the change if i'm paying with cash, if i only have my card there is no option to tip with the card swipe being in the car stall.

I'm on the fence with Buffet places, do they deserve a tip for filling your glass once and clearing a plate?

I usually let them keep the change unless it's a little bit. Then I add a couple more quarters. I think I'll start giving them more, and I have never had one act like she was going to just keep the change like it's owed to her. If they did, I would then ask for it back.

I tip if they can get the order right, which is usually half of the time.

The are not paid like waiters, I know a couple kids at the local Sonic and they are clearing $12-15 an hour with tips.

I hunted with a guy quite a few years back who owns a sonic in northeast Arkansas. He said tipping is not necessary or expected. Not sure if pay depends on the owner or not but they did not receive waitress wages of a couple bucks an hour at his business. They got minimum wage or better.
I usually tip though when I go to sonic.

Their Chicago Dogs, Flatmelts and Limeades are the bomb, so yes, I tip.

If you can't afford an extra buck, go somewhere else. It's been their business model for 50 years. Tip the car hops you cheap bastages

Their pay scale may have changed in the last few years. My sister inlaw put herself through college as a carhop. If they clear $12-15 per hour, more power to them. Atleast they have a work ethic. What is an extra dollar or two in the grand scheme of things?

This part of your post is true, but take away the tips and what do they make per hr?

If my daughter can make $100 in a 6 hr shift she will make over $16 per hr, darn good money for a 18 year old, but if she had to rely entirely on her hourly pay from her employer without the tips she would make about $13.50 total in the same 6 hours

Now the workers inside, cooks, order takers, etc. do make minimum wage. it's just the carhops that don't, but they get the tips

Things change. The founder of Kellogg's cereal used to own an insane asylum and give yogurt enemas to patients to try and cure them, but they don't do that anymore. If they get waitress wages that's sad. If they get paid at least minimum wage like every other fast food joint we should not have to tip. Wish I really knew the answer.
