Either Coachwhip (Masticophis flagellum) or Black Racer (Coluber constrictor). Need a better picture of the head scales. I'm kind of leaning toward Black Racer. Just because a Coachwhip with black over this much of its body isn't as common. Usually they start to lighten a little toward the tail.Last edited by Snakelover; 10-31-2012, 05:34 AM.

The range of the Texas Indigo generally does not extend north beyond a line from about Del Rio to Victoria, so if you are in East Texas, that is not what it is. Also, as has been mentioned, the one in the pic is much too thin for an indigo. If the tail fades to brown as mentioned, then it's an Eastern Coachwhip. A tail that does not fade to brown belongs to a Southern Black Racer, so my vote is for Coachwhip.

Just talked with the snake guy and he said he may have misidentified the snake. He said it is in fact a eastern coachwhip. I am sorry to all. I hate being wrong and hate admitting it more. But I was. Dangit. Eastern coachwhip it is. Gla I didn't bet. Cause I woulda lost this one. Indigos have not been found in walker county as of yet.
