IF it is the rig I am thinking of, those things are only good for shallow wells. 500' is WAY out of its' league. It's best for 100' or less. A 500' well is best left to the professionals.
The pros want 10,000 to drill one. The one man units that I have found claim to go down to 500 feet.

500' with one of those?
You better grab a snickers.
I doubt you'd get much past 125 - 150 feet with one. If you're in an unconsolidated sand, you will have problems with the walls caving in on you. If you're in a clay @ several hundred feet it's going to be hard to drill. If there are any rocks of any type, that little rig won't handle the weight you need to put on the bit to fail the rocks.
I've seen them used to drill shallow wells to about 75' and they actually work pretty good. you could finish a well like that in a day.

Try drilling 500' with one of those rigs and, unless you encounter a true miracle, $10k will seem cheap.
Someone with a TON of experience in geology, hydrology, drilling fluids, and well construction MAY be able to nurse one of those things down to 500' in the best of circumstances. The layperson looking to save some cash is getting in WAY over their head. You'll end up spending the $10k + in the long run anyway.
I have HIRED drillers drill lots of monitoring wells (farily shallow) for me. Plus we did a 700' water well at our place.
And had a guy come redrill a 700'er on my uncles place.
If you are not familiar with caseing a well, and where to stop, capping the well head, etc....(not to mention installing pump).....You are Pi$$'n in the wind.
Cost me nearly 12k to get a well on my place. We had to install a holding tank and an additional water pump on top of that to kill the smell.
Probably close to 15k all together. Still need a water softener and a pump house.
Water is expensive. It would be nice if you could do it your self.[/QUOTE]
Jeremy did you put a spray system in the tank. I’m thinking of doing this.
I placed a inline chlorinator in mine and it got red of the smell. I need more Psi.
I know some one who drilled a few around Houston. He said it was no big deal but only had to drill 100'.
