Dude, just repeatedly show him a picture of your avatar. That'll stop anybody in their tracks.

        LOL

Our heeler still has her tail too. I never understood that. It makes a great handle if you need an immediate attention getter when she wants to "ignore" a stop/sit command LOL

Why do they cut their tails off anyway?

i think the tail cutting is a cosmetic thing...but i was reading somewhere about heelers that said their tail really helps with their agility when running cows, doing agility tricks, etc...

the knee to the chest works real well. Used it on 2 labs and it broke them real quick.

The tail cutting is common especially in Texas. I have never figured out why and nobody that does it can give you a logical reason. They don't just dock it like a pointer or dobermen (sp) they cut it off at the hips! And if you want one with a tail you better plan ahead. I was lucky my dog was in a small litter and I got there soon enough to save his tail.

It's funny, no one around here thinks he's a heeler, they think he is some kinda German Shepard (he's pretty black, too), until I turn him loose on some cows. And they say I've never seen a heeler with a tail. I guess they think they are born without a tail.

Put a choke collar on him with the lease attached. Then stand on the lease and have someone else walk up to him. Everytime he tries to jump he chokes himself and should figure it out very soon that jumping is causing the pain.

Guys, dogs don't normally need to experience pain to learn good/bad behavior.

Maybe I've been blessed with some good dogs over the years but they all wanted to please and the secret was just getting them to understand what I wanted them to do.

An e-collar should not be used to teach a dog anything. It should be used to formalize and reinforce known commands (to get immediate responses). Normally it's a good idea to introduce another form of force (heeling stick, check cord) and then work the e-collar in slowly while still using the other form of force. That way the dog understands that you are responsible for the stimulus and that they can remove it by obeying commands.

I would not recommend the collar in this situation. If not done the right way, the dog could react aggressively in defense.

This is not a bad use of the collar if the dog has already been collar conditioned. If the dog has not been collar conditioned, then yes it would be a bad use. The dog wouldn't understand where the shock came from and wouldn't know how to rid itself of the pressure.

There is plenty of good literature out there on collar conditioning, and I recommend reading it before using a collar.

E collar , and never pet the dog with out making him sit and wait.

She's still working on getting them to stand up...She's relaxed there so they are flopping but when she's alert one or the other usually stands up but she still can't get both going the same time LOL
