    Rifle Hunters......Sharp Shooters......Scope?

I just bought a Thompson Center Pro Hunter .300mag for the heck of it.

What scope would you put on this gun? I want to be accurate at 400-500 yards, in case I have to reach out...

Let me know what you think......

zeiss 4.5-14 X 50, or the leupold VXIII 4.5-14 with the BC reticle.

Both are fine scopes, but I think the zeiss is a little brighter in low light. Zeiss doesn't have the BC reticle though.

being accurate at 500 yards is very tough....it's pretty amazing what happens to ballistics between 400 and 500 yards.

I would say nothing less than a 6.5-20. I have one on every rifle I own and after having 20x, you get spoiled even on close shots.

Zeiss scopes are all they are cracked up to be. I have the simple conquest 3.5X10X40 on my .280 and it is clear and bright. I don't plan on shooting out to 500 with it however so more magnification is needed. I paid just over $600 for my Zeiss and who knows what the bigger models.

However, I do have the Thompson Encore with the .300 Win Mag heavy barrel on it. I bought a Cabelas Alaskan Guide series scope. I think it is a 52mm objective and magnifies up to 20. It is a great scope and I have not been disappointed. It is big and heavy but it is a Texas deer blind gun where the weight is nice to hold steady and reduce recoil. Check out the Cabelas scopes. I like the one I have on mine.

            I would go with a Leupold VX3 in a 50obj

Ditto. if you are actually planning to shoot deer at those distances (which I strongly disapprove of) you need to practice, practice, and practice at those distances.

I ran a 13,000 acre high dollar lease near Laredo back in the 90's and had to have 20 hunters every year willing to pay big bucks. I always had a little turnover and every year would get new hunters with high dollar equipment that had over-inflated perceptions of how far they could shoot accurately.

I had a trashcan lid set up at 500 yards from a shooting bench out on the runway. They would get a few drinks in them and start bragging about how they broke a running deers neck at 500 yards and I would call BS and bet them a hundred dollars that couldn't even hit a trash can lid at 500 yards. I usually made $200-$300 a year on this bet. There were only 2 hunters on the ranch (me and one other guy) that could consistently make that shot and it's a LOT harder than you would think. Ballistics DO get squirrelly after 350 yards and if you do not know EXACTLY how far your target is and have the ballistic performance of YOUR gun/load at all the variables memorized, plus have the equipment/ability to consistently make that shot +/- 2" it is unethical to take those shots.

yep 5 hundy is a little tougher than it seems. Zeiss is what I would look into for a reasonably priced scope.

I really like my Leupold Mark 4 4.5 x 14. If i had to do it all over again, I might go with a 6.5 x 20 just to get more magnification.....
