Unless you plan on using target turrents and adjusting for those ranges, look at something with the graduated reticle. I have Zeiss and Nikon. The Zeiss is really clear but I prefer my Nikons. Look at the Monarch 5.5-16.5x44 with BDC. You will have to figure out the graduations(circles) for your rifle and load but once you do, no question on hold over(assuming you use a range finder), just windage.

        Swarovski for going big bucks.

I'm buying a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20X40 with a 30mm tube. You cant beat that scope.

I am a gold ring finatic.

leupold, nightforce, maybe zeiss, US Optics are all good glass

main thing about long distance is KNOWING your ballistics table and being able to dial it in with your elevation and windage knobs, accurate range estimation, and buy a Horus and hand held weather device and you can handle it

if your really serious about going downrange, get a scope adjusted to your specifc bullet by the manufacturer, and buy one with a bullet drop comp, makes it easier than endlessly clicking away on the dials

to put things in perspective, back in the day,the USMC Sniper School used a straight 10x power scope (Unertel) with 1/2 moa clicks on a .308 and started the qual course at 300 meters out to 800m, with a small amount of induced stress added in to make things interesting

great glass makes a rifle, dont buy into the hype about objective size

I don't plan on making a habit out of shooting at 500 yards. But, come on, if a hog, javi, or varmint was standing out there - why not? I am not going to take a 500 yard shot at a trophy deer - I ain't that "Stupid"

I sure like the Nikon, however, my Leupold is sweet! But, I want the BDC - can't beat it.

Oh, and I picked up the gun today ----- WAY SWEET!

I have 4 leupolds and are very happy w/ them. 50 mm is the way to go make a huge difference in low light.

Brandon, I have to disagree with that. Take a high end(swarovsky, Zeiss) scope with a 40mm objective versus a lesser with a 50mm and see which is better in low light.

Labman, glass does make the scope.

                              another for the 6.5-20

in either the Leupy or Zeiss conquest for the $$$$ for what you want. There are better upper end scopes and I have some, but for deer hunting / rare long shots, I have found them to be the best for both worlds. Get the AO!!

You lose just a hair in low light but the xtra mag to crank it up and look for kickers / nubbers / broken tines is worth it & you can leave the spotting scope at home!!

I'm with Brent on this one. You need the 50mm for long range and low light, wider field.
