In Alaska the only thing that would work was 100 % deet, there are some bad critters there, I think it may be a little harmful but will keep the critters away.

Put in a sock, tie a knot in it and hit your boots and legs with it.
I use the same thing. found it back in the early 90's and have stuck with it. Deet, when i sweat makes me feel ill. have not had a single chigger since using sulphur USP grade
I keep it in an old meat tenderizer shake bottle also.

We always used sulphur as a kid.
Dad kept a coffee can under the seat of the truck with a sulphur sock in it.
I definitely believe in it.
The last few years I have just used Deet, or Cedarcide. From what I gather, lavender oil is the most effective organic deterrent. Not sure how I feel about smelling like my wife's favorite bubble bath out in the dove field though....
I guess I need to swing by and grab some sulphur from the garden center.

I brew my own permathrin spray with a bottle from home depot at the same ratio as the commercial brands. It's what the army uses along side DEET for pest (mosquitoes) repellent on bare skin. ONLY apply it to your clothes. Once dry it's odorless and safe, not so much beforehand. It does NOT repel the chiggers, it kills them as they crawl on your clothes (as well as skeeters and ticks. Sulfur repels them.
Sawyer is another brand name version. If you spray your pants, socks and shirt the night before you'll be good to go the next day. Commercial brands have a chemical that helps bond the insecticide to the clothing, so it's good for several washes.
