    Jaspro,

I LOVE my 45-70 Marlin in SS. It kicks some serious booty. Just buy one. I have shot 6" groups at 100 yds. (open sights) with the 325 gr. Hornady. 405 gr. are great for hogs

Gezzzz quad how many 45-70's do you need in a gun? After one shot all the animals that don't hit the ground run for two days.
Its not like I sit in a stand with it.

You can never have to much available ammo, especially when you are on foot with dogs. I would hate to meet face to face with a nasty boar hog only to find out I already shot my 4 rds of ammo getting to him!!!!

Now, I would not sacrifice knockdown for more ammo but, when you can have 9 shells vs 4 shells, same or better knock down, same or better accuracy and have it in a lighter, smaller framed gun..........whats not to love?

If you get the 45-70 you will love it. I love mine. I shoot it all the time with friends and it is a great conversation piece.

When I go hunting I grab the casull.

Cabelas stocks and sells their big-loop lever to upgrade a Marlin 1895. I don't have big hands, and my fingers just fit in the stock loop. If you're a big guy, you may want to look at it.

It's pricey ($150) but it's machined from good steel as I read it.

The also sell an upgraded extractor and trigger too if you're into upgrading guns. I have not done any of them.

I have a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 and a Pedersoli Creedmore replica. The creedmore has a flip up tang peep sight with a globe front sight. First three shots with that gun at 100 yards cloverleafed. I have never shot a more sweet shooting rifle. I killed one doe with it at 75 yards and it was as if someone hit her with a sledgehammer.

Check impactguns.com. They have some good prices on them sometimes. You just need a ffl dealer to have it mailed too.

I've got the 1895GS in 45-70 with a Leupold 2x shotgun (heavy duplex) scope on top. I've taken a deer with it, and I'm looking forward to dealing some misery to the hogs with it.

The thing I love most about the 45-70 in the Marlin GS is that it is so versatile. There are many bullets in the .458 caliber, and the GS is strong enough to handle some seriously hefty loads. When I first starting handloading 45-70 rounds, I looked at 300JHP, 350JSP, 405JSP, and anything else I could find. Now all I load are 300gr hardcast gas-checked slugs. I can load these safely to 2100fps using data from the Sierra manual. That's more energy and momentum at 200yds than a 44mag has at the muzzle. Guaranteed to get full penetration.

I've also got a Marlin 1894 in 44mag that has repeatedly dropped game where they stand, including a 325lb hog at 70 yards. I think the 1894 44mag provides the same smackdown reliability for the game we have in Texas, but the GS is so much fun and is guaranteed to do the job.

Jason, that probably is a trapdoor model which is what my 1863 is. And the reason I don't shoot it is because the old trapdoors can't handle the pressure of modern ammo.

Seen a H&R Cavalry 45-70 with a trap door for $575 in Clute.

                  It was purty!
