I would freeze my ... off in Fairbanks. Look at these averages. You need better choices as I wouldn't live in those two places. I lived in Anchorage for a while but it's not near as brutally cold as Fairbanks. 8 months of the year average lows in fairbanks are below freezing and seven months out of the year have record lows below -23. Throw a 20 to 30 mph wind in there and you will not even want to go outside. No thank you.
Alaska has the highest rate of suicide per capita in the country.
The rate of suicide in the United States was 12.0 suicides per 100,000 people in 2009 (the most recent year available from the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control).
In 2010, Alaska’s rate was 22.6 suicides per 100,000 people.
Alaska had 1,389 suicides between 2001 and 2010 - an average of 139 deaths by suicide per year.
At least one suicide occurred in 176 Alaskan communities between 2000 and 2009.
In 2010, 79% of suicides in Alaska were by men and 21% were committed by women, according to the Bureau of Vital Statistics.
Alaska Native men between the ages of 15-24 have the highest rate of suicide among any demographic in the country, with an average of 141.6 suicides per 100,000 each year between 2000 and 2009.

With that said, if I wasn't from Texas I'd choose Alaska.

That being said, I lived in Fairbanks for five years. Beautiful and all, but wicked cold in the winter. Fairbanks is in a valley, and the cold air tends to settle in there. You get a cold streak that lasts 2 plus weeks every winter of 40-50 BELOW zero. The rest of the winter is zero to minus 30. Now, that being said, I'd take Fairbanks.
Also spent seven years in Kenai and ten years in Anchorage. If I was moving back, I'd go to the southeast (Sitak, Ketchikan, Juneau).
Good luck on whatever you decide!
