Wow lots of ill will toward the suicidal! The bottom line is depression is more than just an emotion! It is linked often times to underlying brain disorders. Obviously, which is why the NFL is looking into the massive affects of concussions etc… However it goes beyond just that! One can be born with it, or one can suffer it through trauma, or it can be linked to chemical imbalances! It really is no diff than allot of brain disorders that have effects from memory loss, slurred speech, involuntary muscle control/spasms, to perhaps brain plaque in Alzheimer’s patients. Certain people DON’T have a choice; their brains are NOT developed to make the correct choice when it comes to even the most serious of decisions like suicide. What you or others consider to be rational may not have been the case with this individual. The more studying that goes into neuropsychology via scans/mri's etc… the more doctors are learning that these are serious issues especially in the area of cell development whether that be pre existing, post trauma (football or war vets), and the creation of new cells before, during, or after or lack there of... So although most would like to sit here and say he had a choice, that’s not always the case, especially in those suffering from depression caused by an underdeveloped or traumatized portion of the brain such as the hypothalamus or hippocampus. Bottom line, depression is more than just an emotion? It ultimately lead this man to end his life. Something to educate yourself on before making remarks like “I got no sympathy etc” which is the prime portion of the brain that leads one to also not have sympathy to commit suicide!
Shhhhh.......don't go getting all neurologically accurate!!! The bible says anyone that commits suicide is going to heck! Great post by the way!
The guy took it own life at a High School. I know school is out right now but High School aged kids are highly impressionable and everyone there will know where "it" happened. No sympathy here.

Yes! I think that is the true problem, not enough GOD fear! I know this I dont want to meet the MAN before I have too! Im pretty well certain I need some good forgiveness! and trust me I keep praying for it! oh and as long as they go to HECK and not heckmonkeys I dont want them at my house!
While there is a behavorial component, chemical depression is real. Telling somebody who is truly clinically depressed to "suck it it up and snap out of it" is like saying the same thing to someone who has kidney disease.

X2
Couldnt agree more with you!

The decison to take one's own life is never a rational one. I used to be in the "suicide is the coward's way out" crowd until I had a few people really close to me end it in that way. People who commit suicide have often lost the ability to reason, usually due to depression. Until you have dealt with depression yourself or witnessed it with friends or loved ones, it is hard to understand. Prayers for his soul and for his family.
Speaking as someone who has attempted suicide once (over 10 years ago), I can tell you that it's definitely NOT a rational thought. The best way I've ever been able to describe it, is that my head, quit letting my heart have a say. Depression is extremely dark and scary, and it can cause your brain to believe VERY hopeless things. I thank God daily that my attempt was unsuccessful (like I said, suicide not rational, and by God's grace my attempt failed). To say you have no sympathy is definitely your right, but it also just expresses that you don't understand deep depression and hopelessness. I pray that those of you who lack compassion never face the depths of despair, because I can assure you of one thing, suicidal thoughts take over VERY quickly.

It's one thing to feel sympathy for a family that is put through losing a loved one in any way. Entirely different to not consider Suicide anything but a selfish cowardly act.

But (refer to my earlier reply concerning family impact) if I was diagnosed terminal I would discuss things with my family and just might decide to end things so they are not broke extending the suffering of a dead man. That is not cowardly IMO.

Yep! Following 7 consecuctive years of promoting anti-depressents & anti-psychotics for Eli Lilly i quickly learned it AINT all in your head. The disease is definitely real!
I have no idea! It is one of those statements that we grew up with. I am sure if it is stated in the bible someone on TBH will dig it up.
Yeah, sorry if I was rude in my response. That's just something that has always bothered me. The reasoning I've always heard is that you literally die committing a sin (murder). The problem with that is, the same would need to be true if you drop an F bomb as you get sideswiped by an 18 wheeler and die on impact. I don't believe that it's true, and there really isn't a scriptural reference that will definitively prove otherwise (I've done lots of homework on it).
If you're saved, you're saved. I knew Jesus before I battled depression, and I knew Him better after He healed my broken mind.
We went thru this a couple years ago, he was a defensive lineman for the bronco's and then the falcons. He used to take me dove hunting when I was kid, single shot twenty gauge and one shell at a time.
Prayers to the family, it's a long healing process.

The Bible mentions six people who committed suicide (Judges 9:54; 1 Samuel 31:4-6; 2 Samuel 17:23; 1 Kings 16:18; Matthew 27:5). None of them were righteous, to say the least. The Bible nowhere explicitly states “it is a sin to commit suicide,” but the Bible does condemn murder (Exodus 20:13). Suicide is “self-murder,” therefore suicide is a sin since murder is a sin. Aside from the “do not commit murder” command, suicide is also sin for the following two reasons, one theological and one practical: (1) it is God and God alone who has the right to determine life and death, and (2) suicide reveals a belief that God is not powerful enough to help you solve your problems.
