ha! Lost a server when the battery backup went down, not when power went out?

I'm an IT director and don't follow. Are you talking about G3/G4 power PC macs? Like, 10+ year old technology? Steve Jobs probably just chuckled.

If its a mirror you can put it anywhere, even a single drive if needed.

it's a mirror....whacked server (which I might actually have a spare for) is an HP DL380G3 (gen 3) and I have a DL380G4 that I was going to migrate to several years back and hadn't yet....

I could prolly do without this server nowadays, just need to gimp it back online so I can see what all I have on there or at the least, just get a TB external and pull the data off the scsi's

I have done this in the past...but it has been a while and didn't do it often enough to recall much.....

Thank goodness it wasn't my other servers....the one LoneAggie is hopefully getting the website updated for so I can get those heaters out of the closet...

the fun and games of your own live public servers at the house have gone....

It probably happened because you didn't fill out your TPS reports correctly.

          Good luck.

I'm picking up what your putting down.

Do you have room in the G4 to move your Raid Controller and drives over to it to recover your data? If so that is probably you easiest fix.

yeah, the g4 is just a carcass waiting for drives and purpose.....only concern was the different raid that is in it...well, guessing it most likely has a different raid....but if the drives are just swapped around, worst case scenario might be the hardware drivers for winblows right?....brain cells are like muscles....they suffer from atrophy if you don't use them...lol

Negative...if you just move the drives. The other controller will likely not recognize the raid. I would attempt moving the drives and the controller from server a to server b.

Not to mention SCSI, verses 3GB SAS vs. 6GB SAS controllers. Best to move it all over if you have available slots.

I found a couple spare power supplies...will try that when I get home, if not, I will pull the raid and drives as you suggested and go from there....wait....I think I might have another g3...did I say that already...lol...

I need to get rid of some of this stuff...

The raid config is generally saved on the controller but if it detects drives that have a different config it will usually warn you. You can go into the Raid setup and tell it to use the config of the drives. If you had another G3 that would be the easiest way to just grab the data off.

The newer controllers should see the RAID settings and rebuild accordingly. you shouldnt lose any data swapping to the newer server.

Ironically, we had a drive in one of our arrays ona 380 fail just the other day. It is a mail server which the guys are in the process of migrating to a new server.

That should be telling us something about the age of the equipment.

However, we keep a spare in house. And more importantly, have extended warranty on the equipment to cover everything - 3 or 6 hour response time 365 days. We had a new drive on site in 2 hours after making the call.

it would be nice....but this is just my goof off setup in my closet at home...lol...I would like to think I could generate enough funds off of the sites to pay for something like that...heck, if I could, it would just be on a shared server or colo'd somewhere and out of my house all together....
