What to with do with 400 acres of mesquite trees?

Can any money be made with mesquite? What's the best way; chip it, cut/stack, mulch? I know we can mill and sell the bigger trees, but what about the smaller, scrubbier stuff?

    Thanks in advance~!

Hunt it and kill the bucks that eat the mesquite bean. As Travis says......"mesquite country is where the big boys hang out".

Wish I had 400 acres of mesquite! That's where the big boys like to play.

Go out and thin it by using remedy to kill part of it! Then use the dead wood to cook with!

Cut the missetoe and sell it up north. There was a guy when I worked at delt who brought it in by the horse trailer load 2 times a year for Christmas and it was small packages and he sold all he could get.

It burns good. That is the only good thing I know about it.

If you want to get rid of it by killin' it, get yourself some Remedy and mix it up with Diesel and spray the trunks. It will kill the stuff then you can doze it up in to piles and sell it for firewood already dried. Or you can cut it all down, then spray the stumps in the spring when it starts to bud out again. That Remedy is some good stuff for mesquite and other acacias, but it works on the bark cambriem layer, not the leaves/greenery like Round-up does.

Flint beat me to it, but I'll leave the post up anyway...

Does chaining work? I've heard of people dragging a big logging chain between two bulldozers to clear pastures

Kill it Kill it Kill IT before you drag or bulldoze it.
Otherwise you'll end up with mesquite everywhere and twice as thick.

We did a root plow a few years back and it helped quite a bit. As mentioned before it will grow back in time though. We use Remedy spray to keep it under control. I would just pile up all the scrubby stuff and use it periodically for fires. You could probably even sell some of it to people who chop and sell firewood.

There are some companies in Texas making parquet flooring from Mesquite. If I remember correctly, the company I spoke with about it several years ago was in Commanche. I don't remeber the name.

I have a next door neighbor who is good friends is a multi-millionaire because of mesquite. He started out getting paid to clear peoples land. Then he started grinding it up and selling the mesquite chips. Then he developed a way to add the mesquite chips to charcoal and then sold the process to Kingsford Charcoal. Now he is RICH! He owns a multi-million dollar house on water at Corpus and George Strait is now building a house about 200 yards down from him. Why didn't I think of that?!
