I was about to post the samething. This was a simple question then turned into a mini fecal storm. Geez!
Not really sure where you are getting this, but I disagree. Seems like a very civil discussion to me. Most of us taxidermists on here know each other, so any ribbing is probably acceptable, and certainly expected.
Sorry it has taken me so long to check in on this thread.....
I have been a taxidermist for many years, always one of those slug part timers.. and have done my share of mounts, including African, life size critters from bobcats to bears. Yip, I have entered a few mounts into the Texas Taxidermy Assoc competition. I even scratched out a few ribbons. I did not do anything different on these pieces than I do with any of the ones I do. Matter of fact, the ones I entered were the ones I happened to have just finished.
I have seen some real crap out there for a lot of money from big time shops that have been in business for years and I have seen some wonderful mounts from a part timer charging bottom dollar.
My feeling is if YOU are happy with your mount and for what you paid for it, fabtastic!
Personally, if my customer walks away smilling I feel good about my quality and my price.
Like the old saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I try to improve my art with every piece I do. I do not take short cuts like saving $5 or $10 buying cheap eyes. T send my capes and skins out to be tanned.
I suggest you look at the work a taxidermist does and if you are OK with his price and turn time, go for it. The more you pay does not mean your mount will be better, just cost more. BUT..... do not decide on your taxidermist by his price. Look at his work!!
I post an occasional pic of my work on here but for sure I am not advertising ...... to be honest, I have as much work as I wont.
Now.... to answer the original question, the average standard shoulder mount will run between $450 to $650..... Yip, you can find someone to do it for $300 and someone for $1200.

As long as y'all know each other it's cool. I'm still new to TBH and you cannot get tone of voice on written messages. Lol. Rib away!!

Yep, no fecal storm here, just freindly discussion.

This is a good, well reasoned, non high horse response. Thank you.
