Deer With Tongue Hanging Out - Is That A Result Of Disease?

I went to drive around and check my stand tonight, and saw 3 bucks I've never seen before. Horns are still coming in, but they look good! I'm pretty excited, because this is a spot I didn't even bother hunting much last year.

One of the bucks had his tongue literally flopping below his chin. I tried to look him over really good through my bino's, but couldn't see any sign of an injury. Is that something that could be the result of a disease, or does he just have an injury I couldn't see?

Maybe he was just hot. If I lived outside today, my tongue would have been hanging out too probably.

He definitely didn't look like he was suffering. I probably wouldn't have worried, but when he trotted off, the tongue stayed out and bounced around. Seemed like if he was just hot, that bouncing tongue would be annoying enough to tuck back in for a bit.

He probably just has the timing of the rut all wrong.

Might be trying to start an ugly deer contest in the woods...

We have a doe that is now around 12 years old and her tongue has always hung out like that. Some sort of tongue control problem as it works fine. When she goes to eat she looks and acts normal, when she is done it is just hanging. really weird but, she is huge and healthy and never had a minutes trouble. No clue how or why but, I don't think its anything to worry about!

That is a sign off blue tongue....their tongues will swell so much it hangs from the mouth and get so big they cannot eat or get water....when you find them dead it will be near, (or on) a water hole....
