What is a good trolling motor?

My buddy is looking to replace the trolling motor that came on his newly acquired boat. I know nothing about boats, but agreed to research for him. He says he is more a fan MotorGuide than MinnKota, and that it needs to be a foot pedal control. The boat it is going on, is a 18' fiberglass fish/ski boat that weighs in at 1400lbs. So not sure what thrust power he needs.

Any suggestions on a good solid dependable trolling motor that doesn't cost more than the boat it will be attached to?

He picked up a 1992 Ebbtide Dyna-Trak 181 SS with a Yamaha 150 ProV for only $3500. The boat has under 100hrs on it. And when I took off the outboards cowling, it looked brand spanking new! Anyone ever have one of these boats, or one of these engines?

I wouldn't own a boat without one. Not the cheapest unit in the world......

i ran motor guide for 15+ years and always ended up having problems. been using minn kota for 3 years with no issues. also spent over $1,000 having shafts straightened on motor guides over the years, minn kota has lifetime warranty on them.

MotorGuide Magnum. It has a very tiny 4 blade prop. And it is a 1991 model.

MinnKota's are great. As far as Ipilot goes if you fish for stripers or crappie it is the only way to go. It won't be worth a dang bangin banks for Pickles though.
