    Digital SLR Question

I'm in the market for a beginner digital SLR. I'm currently looking at the Nikon D40 and the Cannon Rebbel XTi 400D. Any of you guys have experience with these cameras? Any others in the $500-$600 range you guys would recommend?

I will be watching this thread closely. I ran over my camera with my truck today.

I've been a Nikon user for over 40 years and they have never let me down. Canon makes great stuff too and I don't think you can go wrong with either.

      All that said....

I'll be making a trip to the camera shop here in the next couple of weeks to see if I can find demos of each of these. I'd like to shoot a couple of shots out of each to see which is the quietest.

We just purchased the Nikon D40x. This thing is amazing. Have owned other, pocket brand digitals, and after seeing our new photos, they were just a waist of money. We plan on upgrading to the larger zoom lens, but the one that comes with it is pretty **** good.

I'm still a fan of THESE! Not an SLR but the glass is high quality with equivalent to a 420mm zoom. Also absolutely no noise, all SLRs will have the shutter noise. BTW, I also have a Nikon D70 and have as much $$$ tied up in one 300mm zoom lenses as this camera cost.

I was in the same quandry until recently. I was leaning heavily towards the Nikon D40, but the more I looked at the Canon Rebel XTi, the more I liked it. Looking at all the lenses that are available down the road as well as the cameras, I ended up getting the Canon.

I'm sure I'd be just as happy with the Nikon too though.

Look at the Canon G9. It's a new camera that can be purchased for around $450.00. Most places are out of stock right now, but supplies should be replenished by early Feb. 12mp, point and shoot, but you can purchase some different lenses for it. It takes awesome pics.

I shoot the Canon XTi (400D). The main reasons were: 1) I think the Canon sensor is superior and 2) The available lenses. I am not saying that Nikon or Olympus have an inferior sensor (quality wise), I just think the Canon is better.

The main thing is fit and function; Canon has all the right buttons in all the right spots for me and it fits my hand very well. Canon also has the sensor cleaner, which is nice, but not a deal maker/breaker.

I do like that Nikon has the IS in the body not the lense, amkes lenses alittle cheaper, but used Canon lenses are easy to get.

Good luck, it's a tough decision.

Does the D40 have IS in the body? I thought it was in the lenses ("VR" for Nikon - vibration reduction).

I prefer Canon. Take a look at a few different brands and models to see what fits you the best.

Debating Canon and Nikon is like debating Mathews and Hoyt. Both companies make excellent products...it's just a matter of personal preference. I love the Canon XTi and XT models. I prefer Canon digital SLRs because I think the controls are easier to navigate and use. But that's just me.

I am also really impressed by some of the new Sony cameras. My dad has a Sony DSC H5 and the glass is very good.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H5 (with some photoshop retouching)

If you want to test the waters, check out the classified section of fredmiranda.com and pick up a check digital rebel used. If you like the DSLR and get into it, sell it for what you paid and buy something new/better.

BTW Sika, nice shot on that BB. They make such great camera targets!

                            Canon 10D w/100-400L

The Nikon D-50 is what my wife uses and she was going after the canon but we like the Nikon works better for her I use the old sony. The Nikin has faster action on the shutter speed what they told her.
