Put a canon in my hands and I will shoot great shots with it without hardly a thought.

I love my Nikon and will never switch, but I'm always impressed with how fast I can get the Canon to do what I ask. There seems to be more of a learning curve with Nikon. Having said that, I have not shot a D40. They may have made it more usuer friendly (and my commentary worth what you paid for it!)

Both cameras have models to suit all levels of photographer. If you have a buddy who shoots a Canon or Nikon, I'd get the same one just so you can "tag team" on ideas and learning.

Heres a couple d40 shots... Excellent Camera. the thing that lead me this route instead of the Canon was the sd memory. My laptops, and desktops, and other camera, all had SD slot. the Canon was compactflash.

      these are just resized...

Well I had a few minutes this morning and decided to answer a couple of recurring questions.

        Lenses & teleconverters:

        Nikon 63
        Canon 63

        Digital Camera Bodies

        Nikon 7
        Canon 7

        Image stabilization

        Nikon In Lens 16 models
        Canon In Lens 14 models

Sensors: There are basically two types of sensors, CMOS and CCD and for a time, Nikon and Canon used different types, but have recently both started using a hybrid sensor with each company doing extensive in camera manipulation of the image before storage with even more variable options available to the end user. Canon actually manufactures their own and also uses them in the Canon brand copier. Nikon has someone else mfg. theirs. What does that mean to the end user? You can't see the difference in the actual resolution of either and you can adjust either to do just about anything you want.

Support: Both companies have long histories of great customer support and both companies are probably going to continue to be in the market insuring long term service for their customer base.

        Bottom line:

Both Nikon and Canon have a fully integrated system backed by many years of success.

        Either is a good choice.

No other camera manufacturer in the world today compares on a system level.
