String came of cam at full draw

I was Gander Mountain today looking at the bows and noticed they had a pink Nuclear Ice for $179.00 I have been looking for one for my daughter and could not pass this up. I asked the employee to unlock the string to see if my daughter could pull it back but it was to much weight for her, so I took the bow from her and pulled back the string it was set heavy and when I got to full draw the string cam out of the cam causing it to fly back and hit me in the chest, left a big whelp. My daughter saw this happen and ran to her mom I don't think she wants a bow now. I looked at the string and it looked like it was unwrapping I gave it back to the employee and he seemed more concerned about the bow instead of if I was okay or if my daughter may have got hit. He put the string back on the cam and pulled it back the string popped but didn't come out all the way he said he doesn't know whats wrong with it and I told him I'm not interested in it, I hope he did not put it back on the shelf when I left. Has any one else had this happen. I sent an email to gander to inform them what happened lets see how there customer service is.

my son started out with a nuclear ice and we didnt have any problems like that, the cams were a little tilted so we had to add a twist here and there to the strings to get them to straiten out but that was the only problem we had. Now he shoots the new diamond atomic and i would recommend that for your daughter over the nuclear ice.
out of curiosity what exactly are you looking for Gander Mtn to do about it? and did you look at a different nuclear ice and see if maybe the cams weren't cut deep enough on the one that you had the issue with or anything?

It was they only nuclear ice they had in the store. I just felt like the employee should have been concerned if it hit my daughter or if I was okay and not bleeding. I contact Gander Mountain so they can address better customer relations in the store.

Good possiblity that if you drew the bow with your fingers, you torqued the string a caused the derailment, same thing with the employee. If not, then there are problems with the cam lean being to severe. Sorry you got hit with the bow and i hope nothing serious happened and sure sorry your daughter got scared at the incident. Yes the store employee should have checked to see if you were OK along with your daughter.

Those are neat little bows but almost every new one I've seen came with excessive cam lean and that will cause them to come unstrung. A twist or two here and there to get the cams running straight like Spoken0313 suggested and problem solved.

i agree, check out the atomic. i think its got more adjustment in it than the ice as well. Its also made better IMO and if i remember correctly at academy it was right at 200 for the bow with quiver and 3 youth arrows. I didnt see a pink one but if you really wanted one i guess you could get the camo dip kit and dip it for her.

Sorry that happened and hope your little girl doesn't get scared off bows.

And many a time I have told companies of issues with customer service or products not to get anything but to let them know of possibly losing a customer...
Called D i c k s sporting goods last week about 12 bags of extremely dirty corn. Just letting them know this is the second time, and the last for me, and they might want to look into it if they really want to carry corn.

"Do not pull any bow in this shop with fingers, or without an arrow on the string", for this reason.
I suspect the employee was too stunned to be really concerned about you since you were still standing and there was no visible blood.
I bet he was concerned about the chewing out he was gonna get from his boss, for letting you pull a really short kids bow with your fingers though.

Good sign to have, but I will say I have seen some Nuclear Ices right out of the box with BAD cam lean that had to be adjusted out before we put them on the shelf

As I have. They still don't get pulled by hand, even after cam lean is addressed.

And that sir is why when your bow shopping, you do so at a place that someone actually knows about bows. That place isnt academy, bass pro, gander, cabelas, etc. Go to a reputable archery shop. Glad no one was hurt, and hope your little girl getting startled by the incedent doesnt scare her away from archery.

I'm glad that the OP and his daugher are both alright.

Having said that: If I owned a bow shop, this sign would be displayed in it. I've never understood why people think pulling a bow off the rack, and drawing it back with their bare fingers is a good idea, or what they're trying to prove, by doing so?

My sons Nuclear Ice had massive cam lean. It took a lot of twists to get most of the lean out.

Is the Nuclear Ice not supposed to be drawn with fingers?? I have never seen a warning on any bow stating "Do not pull with fingers" Me and my 6yr old son shoot his with fingers all day. Heck I bet I've put 500 arrows through his Nuclear ice myself showing him how to shoot..
