Maybe if the mods contacted the guilty party 100% of the time, it would cut down on some of the "Calling out"?

Additionally, many posts/threads are deleted due to an accumulation of posts that cause the topic to spiral downhill. Sometimes because we simply don't have the time or desire to clean up the individual posts, the entire thread becomes a casualty. If we don't have time to clean it up, we definitely don't have time to offer explanation to everybody on the thread as to why it was moderated.
Most moderating is done by "feel", and I'll readily admit that some things we overlook today we may not let go tomorrow. We have guidelines in place for the members and the moderators to try to achieve an overall direction for the site (positive, encouraging, educational, original, etc.). It may not be perfect, but it's been a pretty good forumula so far.

Many times, a thread is deleted because we (I) feel that it's simply not moving the site forward in a positive direction. Trust me when I tell you that nobody wants to hear that their post "didn't add value", regardless of how true it may be.

We rarely "call out" anybody publicly on the site (though sometimes frustrations boil over and we get a little chippy.) Most issues are handled privately with the individual.
