Not for a dog. Or you can buy one of those heart beat units at the baby store it work also to calm them down.

Maybe he meant put a handful of food in there with the pup when you first put him in the kennel, not as a treat for barking. Kind of preventive maintenance if you will. If not I agree with you as well, no positive reinforcement for bad behavior.

What happens when he is done with the handful?.....

He will either bark.....or even worse....have to go poop...

I used a rolled up piece of newspaper with mine, I would grab them gently by the muzzle, hold their mouth for a second, gentle swat on the back of my hand with the newspaper (so they thought they were getting hit and it made lots of noise) would sternly tell them NO several times and "Quiet". it didnt take long... now if my dog is making any sound at all I can say quiet and he doesnt utter a peep.

My 4 month old lab started that this past weekend. Its normally a couple whimpers when he hears me get up and then one bark. I make sure I wait a while before I go downstairs to let him out. I don't want this to become a habit.

If she is clingy, you might try putting a shirt in there with her that smells like you.

you could even use the tones.
The condition is when they bark they get a negative feedback. Age really isnt a factor..in fact the earlier you get them conditioned the easier the rest of the training will be..
my opinion of course.. i will definitely defer to the other trainers on here with more experience..
Just like kids! You don't start correcting them when they are teenagers, you start when they are young'ns.

not if the dog is hungry, and you dont use his food to reinforce other behavior (shouldnt do that anyways)....alot of people dont feed their growing pups enough. The towel tricks works well too though....a kennel should be their "home" by putting a little handful of food in there your making a pup more comfortable after all he's still a baby...him barking or whining is his way of telling you something is wrong....Everyones got their way of doing things when training dogs, sometimes you have to try a few different things and find out what works....The food thing has worked for me in the past with a stubborn one, it wears off after a few weeks to where they dont make noise anymore, i'll let the dog whispers handle the rest

You dont need a shock collar! That's very normal and actually a good training tool. I used to also leash my pup's up to the table leg in the kitchen and sit in the living room where it could see me and ignore it for a while. Worked wonders for patience and even helped to keep the pup from breaking later down the line in its training. Sit and stay will be a simple task too.

I'd be sitting in the living room with a dog AND a kitchen table in my lap

After the first bark, a quick pop of the kennel door, and then a firm "no" will help. The second time, hit the puppy with a good stream of water from a spray bottle, and again a firm "no."

Your dog is smart, he'll make the association quickly.

                            Best of luck!
