i did not know this till i look on the web but they were going to do a lonesome dove movie with starred James Stewart as Augustus McCrae, John Wayne as W.F. Call, and Henry Fonda as Jake Spoon. But plans fell through when Wayne turned it down, leading Stewart to back out, and the project was eventually shelved. Ten years later McMurtry resurrected the screenplay as a full-length novel, which became a bestseller and won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

I remembe Saltwater Slick saying part of the set was on the ranch he hunts. Maybe he'll chime in.

I hunted the ranch for several years! It's in Del Rio, moody and moody own the ranch. We were allowed to go where the set was till some a holes from Houston stole the entering lonesome dove sign!

Thomas Haden Church bought a Famous Ranch out side of San Antonia , I believe , where a lot of Westerns Have been filmed , not sure of name ? Val Kilmer also bought a Famous Ranch in New Mexico , I believe , where a lot of Westerns were filmed . then there is the one Robert Redford bought , so hopefully they are being " conserved " for future movies !

It backed up to the Rio Grande and also had the San Felipe on it. Down by the San Felipe was some amazing dove hunting! I have seen the biggest bucks on this place! I truly miss it!

Here's a list of the film sites for 1989 filming of Lonesome Dove. When I copied this I had hoped that would be pasted as links to the respective locations, but it didn't. So you'll hafta do your own leg work. I'm gonna take a nap.
