I think it looks good on paper, but alot of people have to much time and money into their set ups and camp to just let somebody swap with them for a yr. I think the only way this could work is if you knew the guy that you would swap with very well, and you had the same managment tactics or both had no managment tactics.
That being said I don't know anybody I'd swap with. Heck I got lease mates shooting deer from stand already.
Well it's better than loosing it all together. To pursue your big game bucket list. At worst you out a couple deer? If you knew the person very well it would be bad...
We have had a hunter on our lease actually pull this off. He was scheduled to work a 2 month turn around in the middle of deer season so he had another guy (We already knew the new hunter) take his spot for the year.
The new guy hunted the season, killed his lease limit and the other hunter came back the following year.
I would think as long as everyone (that needs to be) is on board with the idea, it could work.
in all honesty it could work with a close friend or something, but i don't think it could work with some guy you or your leasemates don't know....you could create a sub contract for the guy and if he shoots something that he is not supposed to its grounds for being kicked off with no return of cash....
I know the first year is always the best to me..new place to explore, hunt etc.. Then once it's figured out and predictable it's not as fun (to me).
I will have to say I know exactly where you are coming from on this. I have found myself feeling the exact same way in the past.
I love getting a new place, exploring it, looking at it on GoogleEarth, setting up, etc etc. That is alot of the fun to me.
Once the "new" wears off it, not quite the same.
I almost did the exact same thing you are talking about back in 2002. I wanted to take a year off from my lease, go to Wyoming and Montana and then be able to come back to the lease the next year. I left everything in place and one of the other hunters used all my stuff for the season. I kinda had to roll the dice on a spot being available to get back on the next year, but I was lucky. Got back on and went right back to hunting my sets like I had never left.
prb the exception not the rule though....i would be more apt to do it with a bowhunter than a rifle hunter, they seem to be a bit more conscientious of what they shoot and better stewards of the land
