    Define "West Texas".....

What do YOU consider West Texas? I've heard people refer to towns such as Eastland or Ranger "West Texas". Born and raised in Abilene, I consider it where the "tall trees" are then West. I think of yucca, mesquites, and little rainfall when I think of West Texas.

West Texas can mean anything west of Ft. Worth. I like to refer to north central Texas though when talking about Abilene, etc.

same here - I grew up in Breckenridge and went to college at A&M Commerce and everyone there considered me from "West Texas". I personally consider west texas anything west of Abilene and East Texas anything East of Dallas

I grew up in sweetwater and I have always considered a line at abilene up to Haskell and down thru winters to maybe menard and junction the breaking point. Anything west of that is west tx.

I've always thought of Junction as the Hill Country.

i would probably says west texas starts in sonora/ozona.

i consider abilene to dallas north central texas.
east of dallas and above/east of houston is east texas.
anything above midland is north texas.
south of san antonio and victoria is south texas.
              houston/beaumont is southeast texas.
austin up to abilene is central texas.

Being in the panhandle, everyone here refers to this as "west texas" as well. Never understood why. When i lived in dallas people would ask me where i was from. If i said "the panhandle" they always said "where is that?". So just started saying "west texas".

i'm from the western part of the state (albeit Southern Plains) and have always been irked by folks referring to places such as abilene, san angelo, junction, etc as west texas....

west texas/southern plains - any thing up on the caprock from Lubbock south to Big Spring.

Real west Texas - from Big Spring you could draw a straight line southwest to Iraan, Sanderson, etc. Anything west of that line is west Texas.

                        my 2 cents...

People's perception of east west texas is based on relativity. Funny, I have friends from the panhandle who have refferred to jacksboro and even Santa Anna as east TX.

I grew up in Crane (south of Odessa), and we always joked that Abilene was NOT west Texas. I always refer to anything west of Big Spring as WEST TX.
