Air and Space is nice, but I like the museum of natural history--and the Jefferson Memorial is my favorite.

Although these were all very nice, my favorite sight of them all was Ford's Theatre and the final resting place (home) across the street (I am a huge Lincoln fan) I would also suggest you read the book "Manhunt". This just made everything that much more interesting and better for me.
WARNING: Please don't waste your time & money on the Aquarium in DC!!!!:
This was a total waste of money!!!
I have seen Saltwater fish stores bigger and better than what this aquarium has to offer. The only interesting/different sight was the albino alligator, but not worth the $15 entrance fee. Dallas Aquarium is 50 times better!!!

I lived there for three years growing up and my dad still lives outside of dc. I make it up there a couple of times a year. The "Mall" is a huge area. I would add one to the ones already mentioned. The Holocaust museum is a must. You could spend a month in all of the smithsonians. Air and space and natural history are my favorites.
